As a team of language experts, we\u2019re always researching \u2013 which is why we were eager to take a look at the data to find what, why, and where they\u2019re learning.<\/p>\n<h2>What are they learning?<\/h2>\n<p>Learners logged more than one million sessions in an astounding 204 language pairs.\u00a0<strong>Spanish, French, English, German, and Russian rounded out the top 5 languages,<\/strong>\u00a0the first 3 of which accounted for more than 50% of all learning sessions. When we broke it down by region,\u00a0<strong>the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>most learned<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>languages were those spoken in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4330\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/Graph_MostLearnedLangs.jpg\" alt=\"Graph_MostLearnedLangs\" width=\"550\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/Graph_MostLearnedLangs.jpg 691w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/Graph_MostLearnedLangs-350x206.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4343\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/data_region-1.jpg\" alt=\"data_region\" width=\"511\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/data_region-1.jpg 513w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/data_region-1-350x220.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>English was in the top 3 most-learned languages among individuals, at libraries, in corporate organizations, and in classrooms. <strong>English was studied by native speakers of 27 different languages,<\/strong>\u00a0the most popular of which were Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Turkish.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4329\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/Graph_ESL.jpg\" alt=\"Graph_ESL\" width=\"546\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/Graph_ESL.jpg 674w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/Graph_ESL-350x232.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although not as widely used, <strong>9 Native American languages make our list of important languages learned this year.<\/strong> Thanks to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/2013\/07\/01\/transparent-language-launches-the-7000-languages-project\/\">7000 Languages Project<\/a>, we donate our tech to language experts looking to promote and preserve under-resourced languages like these.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4339\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/data_7000LP.jpg\" alt=\"data_7000LP\" width=\"540\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/data_7000LP.jpg 611w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/data_7000LP-350x203.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With all of the languages listed in the charts above, you might be surprised to hear that those languages don\u2019t even cover the tip of the iceberg in terms of the languages available in Transparent Language Online. Our program covers over 105 languages for English speakers, as well as ESL for speakers of 27 different languages (which users were taking full advantage of, as noted above).<strong> With all of these languages available, our surveyed users indicated that was one of the reasons they chose Transparent Language\u2013 because it offered languages they couldn\u2019t find anywhere else.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Why are they learning?<\/h2>\n<p>Interestingly<strong>, nearly half of surveyed learners indicated that they are learning for their own personal interest.<\/strong> But, that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not taking it seriously\u2014more than 70% of surveyed users consider themselves serious about learning a language and want to be able to communicate efficiently in many subjects, obtain advanced skills and vocabulary, and eventually being considered fluent.<\/p>\n<p>Less than 7% indicated they were just learning casually. This makes sense given their motivational reasons, including travel, education, career advancement, and heritage \u2013 just to name a few.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" challenges for surveyed learners have little to do with language, like difficult grammar or a new alphabet (though those factor in for many learners, too). <strong>The three biggest challenges involved finding someone with whom to <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\/personal\/connect\/\"><strong>practice speaking<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/2015\/10\/14\/how-to-remember-not-to-forget-a-language\/\"><strong>remembering what they\u2019ve learned<\/strong><\/a><strong>, and finding <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\/ebooks\/10-ways-to-make-more-time-for-language-learning.html\"><strong>enough time to dedicate to learning<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4359\" they learning?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Nearly 40% of learners accessed Transparent Language from outside the United States.<\/strong>\u00a0After the U.S., the countries with the most learners were the
