In his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.umich.edu\/titleDetailDesc.do?id=23925\">Vocabulary Myths<\/a>, Keith Folse tells a story about not knowing the right word.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Having just moved to a rural town in Japan to teach English, Folse wanted to buy some flour. He\u2019d learned the Japanese sentence pattern \u201cSumimasen, ____ -wa doko desu ka?\u201d or \u201cExcuse me, where is the ____?\u201d and confidently set out on his mission to the local supermarket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Yet, even with this basic grammar, he was lacking the necessary knowledge: he did not know the word for flour. After wandering the store unable to locate any identifiable bags of flour, he spied one of his students outside. He ran outside and called out, \u201cHow do you say flour in Japanese?\u201d Unfortunately his student replied \u201cHana\u201d \u2013 the word for flower, instead of komugi\u2014the word for flour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">After being presented with chrysanthemums in the produce section, Folse left the store without purchasing flour. He reflects: \u201cWhat I needed in that situation was one word: komugi. In this experience, I learned that vocabulary is actually more important than grammar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don\u2019t get us wrong; grammar is important!
