In fact, it\u2019s quite common.\u202fMillions of people\u202fbecome\u202ffans of\u202fEnrique Iglesias, Luciano Pavarotti, and\u202fJohnny\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hallyday<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fwithout having the slightest idea of the actual meaning of the lyrics they&#8217;re singing.\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A song by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/monicamercuri\/2019\/08\/30\/taylor-swifts-lover-explodes-in-china-reaches-1-million-in-sales\/#44ca632a3660\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Taylor Swift<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0topped the charts in China last year with over a million hits in a week<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0It is inconceivable that everyone singing along to that song<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0during her November 2019 concert<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Guangzhou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0spoke English.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Still,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as they s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ng her songs, they bec<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">me acquainted with English terms like\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">magnetic force<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">running scared<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">roll the dice<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This isn\u2019t textbook learning, and some may argue that it isn\u2019t learning at all, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ut<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202faccording to a\u202f2014 study published in\u202f<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Memory &amp; Cognition,<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0those young Swift fans who later elect to study English will have a significant advantage over their Chinese\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">counterparts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the study, sixty adults completed different \u201clisten-and-repeat\u201d drills on an unfamiliar language. The participants who listened to song snippets in the language performed far better than those who simply heard the language spoken, indicating that listening and singing along to songs, even if the words are unfamiliar,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aids<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0memorization.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The benefits of music appreciation for language learners isn\u2019t limited to popular songs.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Language and music share the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disciplines required to recognize nuances in timing, timbre, and pitch.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Music instruction\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">improves language processing skills, and vice-versa.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">shown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that musicians are ideal candidates for multi-lingual studies.
