There is much debate over the\u00a0teaching and learning\u00a0of\u00a0Latin due to the language&#8217;s &#8220;supposed&#8221; uselessness. The fact that Latin has been categorized as a dead language ( which is defined as: &#8220;A language no longer in everyday use\u00a0by a native population&#8221;) has often been a\u00a0negative point in these debates. It has even lead to the British Museum hosting the academic debate earlier this summer: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/whats_on\/events_calendar\/event_detail.aspx?eventId=225\" target=\"_blank\">Does Latin have a Future?<\/a>\u00a0 So, the question must be posed &#8220;Is there any advantage to learning a dead language?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/07\/222427_127937387356012_1662700372_n.jpg\" aria-label=\"222427 127937387356012 1662700372 N 300x224\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2241\" alt=\"Catholic Meme\"  width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/07\/222427_127937387356012_1662700372_n-300x224.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although, Latin is defined as a dead language due to the fact that is has no native population; it could be\u00a0argued that the Vatican&#8217;s population\u00a0and academics are Latin&#8217;s unconventional native population. The BBC did the following survey:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/fo9tMl0BufQ\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/fo9tMl0BufQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While this\u00a0survey of Latin&#8217;s validity seems to be mixed for the modern day person; beyond a doubt Latin&#8217;s prevalence within our society can be seen\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/practicalpages.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/50-common-latin-words-and-meanings.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">phrases<\/a> such as: \u00a0&#8220;per se,&#8221; &#8220;carpe diem,&#8221; &#8220;pro bono,&#8221; &#8220;et cetera,&#8221; and\u00a0&#8220;ergo.&#8221; These are all Latin terms that people use everyday without even considering that they are speaking a dead language. Moreover, Latin roots are used in everyday words and assist in learning new words with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhhe.com\/socscience\/english\/spears\/stu3\/studisk\/word_parts_lists\/latinroots.htm\" target=\"_blank\">similar roots<\/a>.\u00a0Also, Latin has been proved to assist in increasing vocabulary as in this <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.spectator.co.uk\/coffeehouse\/2011\/02\/forget-mandarin-latin-is-the-key-to-success\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iowa Study<\/a>\u00a0that saw a\u00a0grade level improvement with middle school students who studied Latin for twenty minute daily sessions. I would argue that Facebook is one of the most used and popular social media sites. Facebook allows\u00a0their users to use whatever language for their\u00a0Facebook format&#8230;even Latin!\u00a0So,do\u00a0you have a Facebook account? Well, I dare you today to make a 24 hour commitment to change your language from English to Latin. Although it does not change everything from English to Latin, it is enough of a\u00a0change that you notice differences, are able to understand some Latin, and increase your cognitive ability.\u00a0 Go ahead try it\u00a0and become a\u00a0&#8220;Dominus!&#8221; Also,\u00a0give <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.facebook.com\/blog.php?post=145923442130\" target=\"_blank\">Latin Becomes a Living Language<\/a>\u00a0a read on Latin Lingua on Facebook.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2287\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/07\/tumblr_mj7v36Lzqe1rgdok3o1_400.png\" aria-label=\"Tumblr Mj7v36Lzqe1rgdok3o1 400 300x225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2287\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2287\" alt=\"&quot;Uses Latin Language on Facebook....just like a Boss\/ Master.&quot;\"  width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/07\/tumblr_mj7v36Lzqe1rgdok3o1_400-300x225.png\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Uses Latin Language on Facebook&#8230;just like a Boss\/ Master.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are plenty of articles that\u00a0recommend Latin for various reasons:<a href=\"http:\/\/ancienthistory.about.com\/cs\/whystudyclassics\/a\/whystudylatin.htm\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Why Study Latin?<\/a>\u00a0However, I firmly believe that if you have the drive and passion to learn any language that you should pursue it. This passion and drive can be seen amongst the National Junior Classical League students who met\u00a0for their<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/news\/education\/high-school-students-revel-reviving-ancient-languages\" target=\"_blank\"> annual competition<\/a>. These students clearly LOVE Latin.\u00a0 There is something unique with learning Latin, since I have never seen student this excited for modern or &#8220;alive&#8221; languages. A video of\u00a0 the NJCL students can be see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/multimedia\/high-school-students-revel-in-reviving-ancient-languages\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Learning a new language at any point in life is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.care2.com\/causes\/6-reasons-to-learn-a-foreign-language-and-help-your-brain.html\" target=\"_blank\">great for your brain<\/a>! In conclusion, I recommend\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Transparent Language <\/a>\u00a0which offers some fine resources and products to learning a language in addition to their resourceful language\u00a0blogs.<\/p>\n<p>On my last note, I have covered so far\u00a0some basics on Latin in the modern world from media resources to it&#8217;s validity.
