A lesser\u00a0numeral placed before another numeral represent <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">subtraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0I placed before V and X make 4\u00a0 (IV) and 9\u00a0 (IX)<\/li>\n<li>X placed before L and C make 40 (XL) and 90 (XC)<\/li>\n<li>C\u00a0 placed before D and M\u00a0 make 400 (CD) and 900 (CM) according to the same pattern<sup id=\"cite_ref-sun_5-0\"><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Conversely, a lesser numeral placed after another numeral represent <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">addition<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I placed after \u00a0V and X make 6(VI) and 11(XI)<\/li>\n<li>X placed after L and C make 60 (LX) and 110 (CX)<\/li>\n<li>C placed after a D and M make 600 (DC) and 1,100 (MC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. No numeral will ever be used more than <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">three<\/span> consecutive times[ sometimes it is seen in older Latin texts, but this is rare]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4(IV) and 40(XL) will NEVER be written IIII or XXXX<\/li>\n<li>400 (CD) will NEVER be CCCC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. For number over 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX); an unique rule is used: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ANY NUMBER WITH A BAR OVER IT, IS EQUIVALENT TO THAT NUMBER TIMES 1,000<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5(V) with a bar\u00a0over\u00a0 V means 5 times 1,000 which equals 5,000 (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/images\/chars\/Vbar.gif\" alt=\"(V-bar)\" \/>)<\/li>\n<li>10 (X) with a bar over it will be 10,000 (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/images\/chars\/Xbar.gif\" alt=\"(X-bar)\" \/>)<\/li>\n<li>100 (C) with a bar over it will be 100,000 (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/images\/chars\/Cbar.gif\" alt=\"(C-bar)\" \/>)<\/li>\n<li>1,000 (M) with a bar over it will be a 1,000,000 (<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/images\/chars\/Mbar.gif\" alt=\"(M-bar)\" \/>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>NUMBERS 1-100<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>An earlier blog post already addressed ALL the numbers from\u00a01-100; which can be seen<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/latin-numbers-1-100\/\" target=\"_blank\"> here<\/a>.
