However, the document\u2019s exact wording\u00a0was likely the product of months of back-and-forth negotiations between the king and his\u00a0noblemen.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Type of Text:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Historic, Political,<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Genre:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Charter<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Content<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>The Magna Carta was an agreement between King John and a group of English barons in\u00a0response to years of the king\u2019s misrule and excessive taxation. Despite a closing line suggesting\u00a0the charter was \u201cGiven by [John\u2019s] hand,\u201d the charter was more or less forced on him by the\u00a0barons. The charter which would grant rights to all Englishmen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Type of Latin:<\/strong><\/span> \u00a0Medieval\u00a0Latin<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/XM5AUiicoQo\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/XM5AUiicoQo<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Distinguishing Features:<\/strong><\/span> (1).\u00a0England\u2019s greatest legal document was a failure in its initial form.\u00a0Intended as a peace treaty, this first Magna Carta never took full effect and failed to avert war\u00a0between John and the nobles. (2).\u00a0Multiple copies of the first Magna Carta (a sheet of parchment with approximately 3,600 words\u00a0written in vegetable-based in) were distributed to individual English county courts during the\u00a0summer of 1215. Today four of those copies survive; the British Library holds two, and the other\u00a0two are in the collections of the cathedrals at Salisbury and Lincoln. (3).\u00a0A handful of other Magna Cartas are versions issued between 1225 and 1297, when the charter\u00a0officially entered the English statue books. In 2007, a 1297 Magna Carta sold at auction for\u00a0$21.3 million, the most ever paid for a single page of text.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Where is it today:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is no original, but four copies survive.<\/p>\n<p>The plan for four surviving original copies of Magna Carta to be brought together in 2015, at\u00a0the\u00a0British Library.<\/p>\n<p>The 800th anniversary of the original charter will occur on 15 June 2015, and organisations and\u00a0institutions are planning celebratory events. TheBritish Library\u00a0brought together the four existing\u00a0of the 1215 manuscript on 3 February 2015 for a special exhibition.\u00a0British artist\u00a0Cornelia Parker\u00a0was commissioned to create a new artwork,\u00a0Magna Carta (An\u00a0Embroidery), which was unveiled at the British Library on 15 May 2015 and will remain on\u00a0display until 24 July. The artwork is a copy of an earlier version of this Wikipedia page (as it\u00a0appeared on the document&#8217;s 799th anniversary, 15 June 2014), embroidered into the form of a\u00a0tapestry.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">In Pop Culture:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0The film Ironclad depicts the an ending of the Magna Carta.
