So, for the short and sweet version, two entire cities were well preserved in ash which means artifacts and people were preserved.<\/p>\n<p>ANCIENT SCROLLS<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-760 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2010\/12\/Pompeii_Garden_of_the_Fugitives_02-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pompeii_Garden_of_the_Fugitives_02\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The papyri have been burnt, so there is not<br \/>\na huge difference between the paper and the ink,&#8221; Mocella told Live Science. That made it impossible to decipher the words written in the documents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3766\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3766\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3766\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/04\/Papyri-125x300.jpg\" alt=\"Papyrus discovered at the Villa of the Papyri. Courtesy of WikiCommons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Though eventually metallic inks made their way into the mix, it was assumed that this happened well after 79 AD. But when the scientists took fragments of the scrolls and put them in a particle accelerator, the technique revealed quite a lot of lead in the ink.\u00a0Lead is something that X-rays, if sensitive enough and calibrated the right way, can pick up on.
