With the upcoming Avenger’s End Game upon us, I thought it was appropriate to look at this ever popular world and how Latin or Ancient Rome has impacted it.<\/p>\n

  1. Excelsior<\/b>\n
      \n
    1. MARVEL UNIVERSE: Stan Lee’s motto which he\u00a0tweeted that it meant for him: “Finally, what does \u201cExcelsior\u201d mean? \u201cUpward and onward to greater glory!\u201d That\u2019s what I wish you whenever I finish tweeting! Excelsior!”<\/li>\n
    2. LATIN BACKGROUND: coming from the verb “excello<\/a>” meaning “to raise up, to elevate, to surpass, etc.”<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
    3. Adamantium<\/strong><\/b>\n
        \n
      1. MARVEL UNIVERSE: \u201can artificially-created alloy of iron that is the most impervious substance known on Earth.\u201d<\/li>\n
      2. <\/b>LATIN BACKGROUND: Adamant is used to refer to usually a hard substance. Adamantite<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0adamantium<\/i>\u00a0(a metallic name derived from the\u00a0Neo-Latin\u00a0ending\u00a0-ium<\/i>) are also common variants. Adamantinus<\/strong> has, throughout ancient history, referred to things that are “extremely hard,\u00a0inflexible,\u00a0invincible.“<\/i> Virgil describes Tartarus as having a screeching gate protected by columns of solid adamantine (Aeneid<\/i> book VI<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
      3. Vibranium<\/strong>\n
          \n
        1. MARVEL UNIVERSE: “Vibranium<\/em>\u00a0is named for its ability to absorb \u201cvibratory energy,\u201d or soundwaves.\u201cMuch like the material that makes up Wolverine\u2019s claws, adamantium, Captain America\u2018s shield is made of a fictional metal called \u2018vibranium<\/em>.\u2019 In the comics world, vibranium is only found in the African nation of Wakanda, where the Cap\u2019s Avengers teammate Black Panther hails from.\u201d\u00a0 (Rick Marshall, \u201c\u2018Captain America: The First Avenger\u2019: Five things that were missing from the superhero movie,\u201d IFC, July 25, 2011)<\/li>\n
        2. LATIN BACKGROUND: Finding its root in the verb “vibro<\/strong><\/a>“<\/em> meaning “to set in tremulous motion,\u00a0to move rapidly to and fro,\u00a0to brandish,\u00a0shake,\u00a0agitate, to throw with a vibratory motion, to launch, hurl,To glimmer, glitter, gleam, scintillate;”\u00a0<\/i>it is clear that this verb does a great job in describing such a type of metal as many Captain America and Black Panther fans will know.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
        3. Spidey – Sense\"\"<\/a><\/strong>\n
            \n
          1. MARVEL UNIVERSE: “\u201cSpider-Man, you will recall, has a\u00a0\u2018spidey-sense\u2019<\/em>, which alerts him to impending disaster and gives him time to react suitably.\u201d (Giles Coren, \u201cI had my Spider-Man moment. And I failed,\u201d\u00a0The Times<\/em>, May 29, 2010). Spidey-sense<\/em> refers to Spider-Man\u2019s ability to sense danger before it happens. It \u201cmanifests in a tingling feeling at the base of his skull, alerting him to personal danger in proportion to the severity of that danger.\u201d Spidey-sense\u00a0also refers to intuition or instinct in general.<\/li>\n
          2. LATIN BACKGROUND: For of all, spidey-sense is a real thing “All\u00a0spiders have\u00a0unique mechanoreceptory organs called slit sensilla, which allow them to\u00a0sense minute mechanical strains on their exoskeleton.” The term mechanoreceptory comes from mechano (a Greek root)-<\/i>\u00a0+\u00a0receptor.\u00a0 Receptor\u00a0<\/i> in Latin can either come from the noun\u00a0receptor <\/strong><\/a>meaning “A receiver,\u00a0shelterer”\u00a0<\/i>or from the verb recepto<\/strong> <\/a>meaning “to take again,\u00a0receive back; to recover,\u00a0retake, to receive habitually\u00a0or\u00a0often,\u00a0admit,\u00a0harbor,\u00a0protect.“<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
          3. LATIN LANGUAGE\n

            1. MARVEL UNIVERSE: Beast, from X-men, is fluent in several languages including English, German, <\/sup>French,<\/sup> Latin, Italian, <\/sup>Spanish, Japanese, <\/sup>Arabic, and Russian<\/sup> as well as Latverian. In Iron Man 2, Tony Stark and Pepper\u00a0 Potts have a conversation about Natalie’s resume: [looking through Natalie’s resume] Tony Stark<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>She’s fluent in French, Italian, Russian, Latin. Who speaks Latin? Pepper Potts<\/span>: No one speaks Latin. It’s a dead language.<\/li>\n
            2. LATIN BACKGROUND: the Latin Language continues to be used today by students, religious factors, and Latin enthusiasts. Almost on a daily basis, there is a new article<\/a> of how Latin has allowed people of all ages to thrive, learn, express themselves and overall better their lives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
