The sensational historical musical that has been a smash hit on both Broadway and now in most people’s homes thanks to Disney+. The musical is based on the 2004 biography\u00a0Alexander Hamilton<\/i> by Ron Chernow with the twist of rap, hip-hop and other modernization that only the Lin-Manuel Miranda could dream.\u00a0 Alexander Hamilton is considered one of the founding fathers of the United States as well as other individuals such as George Washington, Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson – who are all seen and sing in this musical.<\/p>\n I was quite hesitant at first to watch this musical as previously I had never heard or seen anything related to it beyond the obsession of my friends and family. My main concern was that the historic value of the foundation of America would be lost in this translation of Hamilton’s life to make it accessible to a broader audience. Would Miranda omit ideas? Situations? Would he “twist” history for the sake of entertainment. For what I saw, he did not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The best thing for me in this production was there was Latin present in the lyrics. The form is ablative singular. Parentis<\/em> is from parens<\/em> meaning parents. The form is singular genitive.\u00a0 Therefore, the phrase means “in\/at the place of the parent”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n2. \u00a0“in the place of a parent”<\/sup>\u00a0refers to the legal responsibility of a person or organization to take on some of the functions and responsibilities of a\u00a0parent.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n3. Taking root in\u00a0colonial American<\/b>\u00a0schools, in\u00a0loco parentis<\/b>\u00a0was an idea derived from English common law. The colonists borrowed it from the English ideal of schools having not only educational but also moral responsibility for students.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nTherefore, the Latin in this line could be making references to many things. It could be talking about how Hercules Mulligan feels responsible as a parent for his new nation OR it could simply be referring to the fact that Hercules Mulligan, Irish American, was able to “go back home” to Ireland to be a spy (which he did).<\/div>\n<\/div>\nSome interesting food for thought on a popular musical that perhaps not all the listeners realized they were singing Latin.<\/div>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/latin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/07\/leighton-smith-NPxkSK-makg-unsplash-1-350x263.jpg\")
