As the series Arcane: League of Legends sweeps the views of Netflix, I cannot help but jump on board. As a previous casual player and fan of the show, I needed to do a post about Latin in this world.<\/p>\n

So, what is League of Legends? League of Legends<\/em> is a competitive, fast-paced action-strategy game in which you play a “character” or champion in a team of 5 to defeat another team of 5 by destroying their base’s nexus before they destroy theirs. I am a visual learner – so I would recommend checking out their official video<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Arcane<\/h3>\n

The 2021 animated series is set in the past relative to the League of Legends<\/i> universe and serves as a prequel to the game and retells the origin stories of several characters from Piltover and Zaun. I don’t want to give away anything so I recommend checking out the official trailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

  1. Aatrox: from the Latin\u00a0atrox<\/em> meaning fierce, savage, bloody. heinous, cruel, severe<\/li>\n
  2. Lux: the Latin word,\u00a0lux,<\/em>\u00a0for light.\n

    1. Lucian: The meaning of Lucian is\u00a0‘light’, which comes from the Latin name Lucianus<\/em>. It is a male-given name that is taken from the word ‘lux<\/em>‘, meaning ‘to light’ in Latin.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
    2. Nocturne: derived from Nox<\/em> for the night, nocturnus <\/em>is an adjective for nightly or nocturnal.<\/li>\n
    3. Anivia: originally a word of Latin origin \u201cniveus \/ nivea \/ niveum<\/em>\u201d for snow white.<\/li>\n
    4. Leona: the word comes from Latin and means \u201clioness\u201d.<\/li>\n
    5. Sona: the Latin means \u201csound.<\/li>\n
    6. Varus: Varus<\/i><\/span> means “bent outwards, bow-legged” in Latin, \u00a0a cognomen to describe persons with the anatomical deformity\u00a0that bent their legs outwards like bows.<\/li>\n
    7. Diana: Diana is the goddess’ Roma name for the Greek Artemis. Goddess of the hunt and moon.<\/li>\n
    8. Pantheon: \u00a0the name of the famous building located in Rome.\u00a0The place was once the center of the city, to make offerings to the Gods.<\/li>\n
    9. Vi: While her name is actually Violet, her nickname Vi and a corresponding tattoo of VI relate back to her days in prison as inmate 516. V is Roman Numeral 5 and I is Roman Numeral 1 and together – VI they are 6.<\/li>\n
    10. Jinx: the Latin word\u00a0iynx<\/i>, also spelled\u00a0jynx<\/i>, as ‘j’ and ‘i’ are the same letter in Latin (learn more about this in this blog<\/a>). The Latin\u00a0iynx<\/i>\u00a0came from the Greek name of the\u00a0wryneck\u00a0bird,\u00a0iunx<\/i>, associated with sorcery; not only was the bird used in the casting of spells and in\u00a0divination\u00a0but the Ancient Romans and Greeks traced the bird’s mythological origins to a sorceress named\u00a0Iynx, who was transformed into this bird to punish her for a spell cast on the god\u00a0Zeus.<\/li>\n
    11. Aurelian Sol:\u00a0sol <\/em>is the Latin word for sun and aureus <\/em>is golden. So their name means Golden Sun.<\/li>\n
    12. Karthus: The name Karthus resembles Medieval Latin\u00a0Carthusianus<\/em>, from toponym Cart(h)usia, ultimate Proto-Celtic *katus “battle” and *r\u012bxs “king”<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
