For example the Latin poet <strong>Marcus Valerius Martialis<\/strong>, also known as<strong> <\/strong><strong>Martial<\/strong>, was known to write a few choice poems towards certain individuals:<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Utere lactucis et mollibus utere malvis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nam faciem durum, Phoebe, cacantis habes<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eat lettuce and soft apples, eat:<\/p>\n<p>For you, Phoebus, have the harsh face of a defecating man.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gaius Valerius Catullus<\/strong>, also known as <strong>Catallus<\/strong>, was not above insulting people he disliked:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Othionis caput oppido est pusillum, <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>et eri rustice semilauta crura,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>subtile et leve peditum Libonis,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0si non omnia, displicere vellem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>tibi et Sufficio seni recocto&#8230; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>irascere iterum meis iambis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>inmerentibus, unice imperator.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Otho\u2019s head is quite small,<\/p>\n<p>and its owner\u2019s legs oafishly impure,<\/p>\n<p>soft and dainty is Libo\u2019s farting,<\/p>\n<p>if not with all that, then let me displease you<\/p>\n<p>with Sufficio, old age restored&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>again let my worthless iambics<\/p>\n<p>rile you, our one and only general.<\/p>\n<p>So if anyone purports to tell you how rigid and serious Latin poetry is, you can just refute that assumption by reciting a few lines from Martial and Catallus.
