Some people have this perception that all Latin poetry is boring, proper and stiff, but that\u2019s not true. For example the Latin poet Marcus Valerius Martialis<\/strong>, also known as <\/strong>Martial<\/strong>, was known to write a few choice poems towards certain individuals:<\/p>\n

Utere lactucis et mollibus utere malvis:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Nam faciem durum, Phoebe, cacantis habes<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eat lettuce and soft apples, eat:<\/p>\n

For you, Phoebus, have the harsh face of a defecating man.<\/p>\n

Gaius Valerius Catullus<\/strong>, also known as Catallus<\/strong>, was not above insulting people he disliked:<\/p>\n

Othionis caput oppido est pusillum, <\/strong><\/p>\n

et eri rustice semilauta crura,<\/strong><\/p>\n

subtile et leve peditum Libonis,<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0si non omnia, displicere vellem<\/strong><\/p>\n

tibi et Sufficio seni recocto… <\/strong><\/p>\n

irascere iterum meis iambis<\/strong><\/p>\n

inmerentibus, unice imperator.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Otho\u2019s head is quite small,<\/p>\n

and its owner\u2019s legs oafishly impure,<\/p>\n

soft and dainty is Libo\u2019s farting,<\/p>\n

if not with all that, then let me displease you<\/p>\n

with Sufficio, old age restored…<\/p>\n

again let my worthless iambics<\/p>\n

rile you, our one and only general.<\/p>\n

So if anyone purports to tell you how rigid and serious Latin poetry is, you can just refute that assumption by reciting a few lines from Martial and Catallus. Oh and by the way, trust me when I say that the two poems that I chose were pretty tame, especially in comparison to the erotic poetry of Martial and Catallus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
