I just found a new hobby-sailing.\u00a0 My boyfriend and I spent last weekend learning how to sail.\u00a0 I had been out sailing with my dad a couple of times, but it was years ago and I forgot most of the things he taught me about sailing.\u00a0 Unless you grow up with it, I think it is really something you need to learn from someone who has done it for a long time.\u00a0 Although my father is obsessed with sailing, you might say, he is no U.S. Coastguard Captain.\u00a0 The guy that took my boyfriend and I out last weekend was of that breed.\u00a0 He is nearly 60, started sailing before he was 20, got hooked, and has been sailing ever since.\u00a0 He frequently upgrades his license, which can no longer be upgraded anymore, and loves nothing more than teaching others how to sail.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our incredible experience got me thinking about sailing in Norway.\u00a0 As I wrote about in a recent post, Norway is home to many bodies of water, including the ocean and hundreds of fjords.\u00a0 Now that I have been introduced to the beauty of sailing, I would love to sail in Norway.\u00a0 Shall we learn some sailing terms?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00e5 seile<\/strong> is to sail<\/p>\n

en seilb\u00e5t<\/strong> is a sailboat<\/p>\n

en sj\u00f8mann<\/strong> is a sailor<\/p>\n

et ror <\/strong>is a rudder, st\u00e5 til rors <\/strong>is to be at the helm, ta roret <\/strong>is to take the helm<\/p>\n

et skipsskrov <\/strong>or skipssgrov <\/strong>is a hull<\/p>\n

en aktersavn<\/strong> is\u00a0a stern (back of the boat)<\/p>\n

en baug <\/strong>is\u00a0a bow (front of the boat)<\/p>\n

styrbord <\/strong>is starboard (as in starboard side of the boat, which is the right side if you’re looking at the bow)<\/p>\n

babord <\/strong>is port (as in port side of the boat, which is the left side if you’re looking at the stern)<\/p>\n

en vinsj <\/strong>is a winch (the drum that helps to tighten lines (ropes))<\/p>\n

vind <\/strong>is wind<\/p>\n

en knop <\/strong>is a knot (as in speed)<\/p>\n

en knute <\/strong>is a knot (as in a tied rope to secure a line) remember russeknuter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e5 heise seil<\/strong> is to set sail<\/p>\n

\u00e5 dra p\u00e5 seiltur<\/strong> is to go for a sail<\/p>\n
