{"id":1182,"date":"2011-09-02T13:00:20","date_gmt":"2011-09-02T13:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=1182"},"modified":"2011-09-02T13:00:20","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T13:00:20","slug":"the-norwegian-word-%c2%b4pa%c2%b4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/the-norwegian-word-%c2%b4pa%c2%b4\/","title":{"rendered":"The Norwegian Word \u00b4P\u00e5\u00b4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2011\/09\/images-1.jpeg\" aria-label=\"Images 1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1185\"  alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"191\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2011\/09\/images-1.jpeg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several days ago, I wrote a post about the many different ways to use the word \u00b4<strong>til\u00b4<\/strong>in Norwegian. \u00a0At first glance, one might think it\u00b4s confusing and a bit ridiculous that a language would use one word in so many different ways. \u00a0However, the word \u00b4to\u00b4in English has many different meanings or is used in many different ways as well.<\/p>\n<p>Just when you thought you could rest easy and let \u00b4<strong>til<\/strong>\u00b4sink in&#8230;I have seen several requests to see a post about the word \u00b4<strong>p\u00e5<\/strong>\u00b4in Norwegian and so I listen to my readers and meet the request:) \u00a0By the way, I really appreciate it when you let me know what you would like to learn about. \u00a0I do not anticipate ever completely run out of topics to write about, but it is certainly helpful to receive ideas now and then on those days that I am totally braindead and think that I cannot possibly think of something to write about that I haven\u00b4t addressed in previous posts.<\/p>\n<p>Back to \u00b4<strong>p\u00e5<\/strong>\u00b4&#8230;.First, I\u00b4d like you to copy and paste the following link into a new browser and click on the PLAY triangle to hear the word \u00b4<strong>p\u00e5<\/strong>\u00b4pronounced..<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.forvo.com\/word\/p\u00e5\/<\/p>\n<p>With just one syllable, it is a very simple word to pronounce. \u00a0While it sounds very similar to Poe, as in the last name of Edgar Allen, if you listen a tad more closely and better yet, if you watch a native Norwegian speaker\u00b4s mouth when they pronounce this word, you will notice a sound absent in the English language. \u00a0If one says <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> quickly, it is almost impossible for the speaker to enunciate the extra sound that you will hear if the speaker pronounces it slowly. \u00a0If one says it slowly, it is almost as if one adds a lightning fast \u00b4<strong>\u00f8\u00b4<\/strong>on the end. \u00a0I\u00b4m sitting hear pronouncing the word out loud to myself while I attempt to determine how to explain the positions my mouth has to be in.<\/p>\n<p>The American pronunciation of the last name Poe stresses the P. \u00a0The Norwegian pronunciation of the word <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> stresses the <strong>\u00e5<\/strong>. \u00a0You almost have to drop your chin a bit and get a bit manly if you are a girl to get the dynamics of the pronunciation down.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the link again and then start listening for the word <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> when you are streaming the news, watching a Norwegian movie, or if you are in the presence of a Norwegian conversation.<\/p>\n<p>To conclude, let\u00b4s look at the various definitions of and ways to use the word <strong>p\u00e5. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>P\u00e5<\/strong> can translate to the following meanings in English: to, upon, at, onto, after, towards, for, in, of, by, by means of, and with.<\/p>\n<p>See <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> used in a variety of different ways:<\/p>\n<p>Jeg skal <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> skole i dag. \u00a0I\u00b4m going <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to<\/span> school today.<\/p>\n<p>Hva holder du <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> med? \u00a0What are you doing?<\/p>\n<p>gang <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> gang-time <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">after<\/span> time<\/p>\n<p>langt<strong> p\u00e5<\/strong> natt-late <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">at<\/span> night<\/p>\n<p>De er\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">p\u00e5<\/span><\/strong> bes\u00f8k til universitetet. \u00a0They are on a visit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to<\/span> the university.<\/p>\n<p>Min kj\u00e6reste er kapteninen <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> skipet. \u00a0My boyfriend is the captain <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">on<\/span> the ship.<\/p>\n<p>Har du tyggis <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> deg?
