1000th execution.\u00a0 In the U.S. that is since it became legal \u00e5 henrette<\/strong> (to execute) prisoners in 1977.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 That is 1000 in 32 years.\u00a0 Seems like a lot to me.\u00a0 I still don’t know what I think is the best method for punishing serial killers and rapists.\u00a0 Who am I to know if they can be rehabilitated and one day give back to society.\u00a0 Perhaps those thousand people didn’t deserve to live after what they had done.\u00a0 I cannot venture to say.\u00a0 I do know two things though:\u00a0\u00a0the number of U.S. citizens who support\u00a0d\u00f8dsstraffen<\/strong>\u00a0(death penalty) has gone significantly down (from about\u00a080% to 60%\u00a0in the last 20 years and\u00a0the United States is “det eneste “s\u00e5kalte” vestlige landet<\/strong>” (“the only “so-called western country-according to the article in Aftenposten online the other day) that practices d\u00f8dsstraffen<\/strong>.\u00a0 While it is true that 60% of the world’s population live in countries that practice the death penalty,\u00a0isn’t it strange that d\u00f8dsstraffen<\/strong>,\u00a0something most people would agree is quite barbaric, is practiced by the United States, the superpower of the world?\u00a0 Seems backwards.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To be clear, 15 states\u00a0in the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0and\u00a0the District of\u00a0Columbia now ban the d\u00f8dsstraffen<\/strong>.\u00a0 This brings me to abolitionism.\u00a0 Most people today are abolitionists in terms of the d\u00f8dsstraffen<\/strong>, meaning that they do not support it and wish to avskaffe <\/strong>(abolish) the death penalty.\u00a0 Let’s go through a list of some countries and when they abolished d\u00f8dsstraffen<\/strong>.\u00a0 It was Grand Duke Leopold II who was the first in modern times to ban d\u00f8dsstraffen <\/strong>in the (then) independent Grand Duchy of Tuscany (in the late 18th century).\u00a0 The Roman Republic banned it in 1849, followed by Venezuela in 1863.\u00a0 In Portugal, 1867.\u00a0 In the United Kingdom, 1969 (the last took place in 1964).\u00a0 France in 1981, Canada 1976, Australia 1985.\u00a0 Togo, Africa,is the most recent country to have avskaffet <\/strong>(abolished)\u00a0d\u00f8dsstraffen<\/strong> <\/strong>on June 23 of this year.\u00a0 What about Norge<\/strong>?\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Norway, 300 people were\u00a0burned in the 16th and 17th centuries during the witch hunts.\u00a0 In 1815, the cruelest forms of d\u00f8dsstraffen <\/strong>were avskaffet.\u00a0 <\/strong>In 1876 the last execution during peacetime was committed.\u00a0 In Norway the last execution in peacetime was carried out in 1876.\u00a0 During World War II, Vidkun Quisling’s <\/strong>regime brought d\u00f8dsstraffen <\/strong>back into the picture.\u00a0 In 1988, Norway signed protocol 6 of the European Convention for Human Rights banning the death penatly in peacetime.\u00a0 Norway opposes d\u00f8dsstraffen <\/strong>at home and outside of the country.\u00a0 In fact, Norway will not send Mullah Krekar <\/strong>(a Kurd from northern Iraq who was the original leader of an armed Islamic group) back to his homecountry, Iraq, because of the potential of being charged with crimes punished by capital punishment there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Norway is avidly against the practice of d\u00f8dsstraffen <\/strong>because it violates the sanctity of human life.\u00a0<\/p>\n
