{"id":128,"date":"2009-07-30T10:27:41","date_gmt":"2009-07-30T14:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=128"},"modified":"2009-07-30T10:27:41","modified_gmt":"2009-07-30T14:27:41","slug":"snus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/snus\/","title":{"rendered":"Snus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Forskere friskmelder snusen.<\/strong>\u00a0 Researchers report that <strong>snus <\/strong>is healthy.\u00a0 The word <strong>friskmelder <\/strong>does not have an exact translation in English, but I suppose I wouldn&#8217;t say researchers think <strong>snus <\/strong>is &#8216;healthy&#8217;, but rather not unhealthy, not dangerous.\u00a0 For those of you who don&#8217;t know what <strong>snus <\/strong>is, it is a smokeless form of tobacco, also known as chew, chaw, or a dip. <strong>Snus <\/strong>(pronounced &#8216;snoose&#8217; and actually a word that Americans and others outside of Scandinavia use) has a two unique characteristics 1-it usually does not require spitting and 2-it is steam-cured rather than fire-cured and is not fermented and thus there is no added sugar.\u00a0 <strong>Snus <\/strong>is a moist powder form of tobacco that is placed usually in the upper lip (hence one of the reasons that it doesn&#8217;t require spitting, because there is less moisture from saliva up there) for up to 30 minutes and then discarded.\u00a0 It comes in loose form (fun to say, loose <strong>snus, <\/strong>which is packed into a cylindar or sphere called a <strong>pris <\/strong>or <strong>prilla<\/strong>-slang for <strong>pris<\/strong>) or in portioned pouches (which are made of the same material as teabags) and come in a tin similar to Skoal or Copehagen.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Snus <\/strong>is very popular in Scandinavia, particularly Sweden and Norway.<\/p>\n<p>As with many health-related issues, there is debate among researchers over whether <strong>snus <\/strong>is better for one&#8217;s health than smoking cigarettes, and even if <strong>snus <\/strong>is damaging to health at all.\u00a0 An article in <em>Aftenposten <\/em>online yesterday addressed a recent study by British researchers, who concluded that <strong>snus <\/strong>is not unhealthy.\u00a0 Most people (including researchers) will definitely agree that using <strong>snus <\/strong>is much less harmfull than smoking cigarettes (<strong>\u00e5 r\u00f8yke sigaretter <\/strong>is &#8216;to smoke cigarettes) because <strong>snus <\/strong>does not involve inhalation, and thus does not affect the lungs.<\/p>\n<p>I was introduced to <strong>snus <\/strong>during my time abroad by my friend Jeff who used it.\u00a0 I decided to try it one time and after that I used it on an occasional basis with him.\u00a0\u00a0I don&#8217;t want to encourage starting to use <strong>snus <\/strong>or anything, but certainly for those of you who smoke, perhaps it would be a better alternative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As cigarette sales dip in the U.S. due to steep price increases for cigarettes and bans on smoking in public places, tobacco companies have started to really advertise and promote <strong>snus.\u00a0 <\/strong>Camel has\u00a0several versions of the pouches.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A large portion of the Swedish and Norwegian population use <strong>snus, <\/strong>both men and women.\u00a0 Leave it to them to find a healthier alternative to cigarettes.\u00a0 Once again, evidence of a healthier population than the U.S. and much of the rest of the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forskere friskmelder snusen.\u00a0 Researchers report that snus is healthy.\u00a0 The word friskmelder does not have an exact translation in English, but I suppose I wouldn&#8217;t say researchers think snus is &#8216;healthy&#8217;, but rather not unhealthy, not dangerous.\u00a0 For those of you who don&#8217;t know what snus is, it is a smokeless form of tobacco, also&hellip;<\/p>\n<p class=\"post-item__readmore\"><a class=\"btn btn--md\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/snus\/\">Continue Reading<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-128","post","type-post","status-publish","hentry","category-culture"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/128","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=128"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/128\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=128"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=128"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=128"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
