As Thanksgiving was just a couple of days ago and holiday parties are finding their way on my calendar, mat er temaet p\u00e5 denne tiden av \u00e5ret (food is the theme at this time of year). \u00a0I was fortunate to attend 3 Thanksgiving celebrations on Thursday, 2 of which I consumed full meals at. \u00a0Some of the mat<\/strong> we consumed include the following:<\/p>\n

kalkun<\/strong> (turkey)<\/p>\n

flere typer poteter<\/strong> (several types of potatoes)<\/p>\n

gr\u00f8nne b\u00f8nner<\/strong> (green beans)<\/p>\n

br\u00f8d<\/strong> (bread)<\/p>\n

stuffing<\/strong> (translation?)<\/p>\n

salat<\/strong> (salad)<\/p>\n

gresskar pai<\/strong> (pumpkin pie)<\/p>\n

s\u00f8tpotet pai<\/strong> (sweet potato pie)<\/p>\n

Thanksgiving is definitely my favorite helligdag<\/strong> (holiday) of the year because it\u00b4s all about god mat og godt selskap<\/strong> (good food and good company). \u00a0It\u00b4s not a religious hellidag<\/strong> and gaver<\/strong>\u00a0(gifts) are not typically involved.<\/p>\n

As you probably know, Norwegians do not celebrate Thanksgiving. \u00a0I simply have mat on the brain right now and so I\u00b4ve been searching for Norwegian restaurants to attend in various cities around the country if and when I end up there. \u00a0I discovered the Sm\u00f6rg\u00e5s Chef at Scandinavia House in New York City. \u00a0There are 3 locations in NYC:<\/p>\n

1) Wall Street<\/p>\n

2) Midtown<\/p>\n

3) West Village<\/p>\n

Both the mat<\/strong> and the atmosf\u00e6re<\/strong> (atmosphere) look and sound amazing!<\/p>\n

Sm\u00f6rg\u00e5s Chef \u00a0“is proud to serve a fresh and unique menu based on the principles of “New Nordic Cuisine,” which is deeply committed to using local, sustainable, and all-natural ingredients. Smorgas owns and operates its own 150-acre farm in the Catskills.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 150 acre farm in the Catskills is called Blenheim Hill Farm. \u00a0The farm has a 2 acre lake which provides plenty of water for the livestock and also a place to swim on hot summer days. \u00a0There is an abundance of l\u00f8nnetr\u00e6r<\/strong> (maple trees) from which sirup<\/strong> (syrup) is extracted.<\/p>\n

There are kuer<\/strong> (cows), griser<\/strong> (pigs), kyllinger<\/strong> (chickens), and sauer<\/strong> (sheep) and Blenheim Hill. \u00a0They roam freely.<\/p>\n

Items you will find on the menu include Nordic Chips with caviar dip, Smorgas Sliders, Goat Cheese and beet salad, Aquavit Cured Gravlaks<\/strong> (Aquavit cured salmon), Wild Mushroom Omelette, Herring Quartet, Ham and Jarlsberg Skillet, Duck Leg Confit with Cherries, and for dessert, your options include riskrem<\/strong> (rice cream), raspberry almond cake, and various vafler (waffles) and sorbets. \u00a0Special drinks include Norwegian Wood, Viking Burial, Miss Bliss, and many other creatively named and mixed beverages. \u00a0There are also a number of Scandinavian beers, various kinds of Aquavit, sodas, and coffee drinks.<\/p>\n
