P\u00e5 restaurant<\/strong> means ‘at a restaurant’ (however you do not need to use ‘a’-in Norwegian there are many phrases that alow you to leave the article out i.e. p\u00e5 kino, p\u00e5 tur, p\u00e5 konsert<\/strong>).\u00a0 I must confess that due to the cost of eating out in Norway, I have not dined in very many Norwegian restaurants.\u00a0 Besides the prices, there is nothing drastically different about restaurants in Norway and restaurants in the United States or elsewhere in northern Europe (that I am aware of at least).\u00a0 But you will want to know how to say many of the same things that you would say in any other restaurant.\u00a0 Before you go p\u00e5 restaurant, <\/strong>you may have a few questions.\u00a0 For example,<\/p>\n

Hvilken restaurant skal vi spise p\u00e5?\u00a0 <\/strong>Which restaurant are we going to eat at?<\/p>\n

Hva slags mat serverer restauranten?\u00a0 <\/strong>What kind of food does this restaurant serve?<\/p>\n

Kan vi spise utend\u00f8rs siden det er s\u00e5 fint ute?\u00a0 <\/strong>Can we sit outside since it is so nice out?<\/p>\n

Once you get to the restaurant, the\u00a0kelner <\/strong>(server)\u00a0will probably ask:<\/p>\n

Hvor mange er dere?\u00a0 <\/strong>How many are you?<\/p>\n

And then he\/she will probably say f\u00f8lg meg <\/strong>(follow me), bring you to your bord <\/strong>(table), and give you menyer <\/strong>(menus).\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

As you look through the meny <\/strong>you will see forrett <\/strong>(first course), hovedrett<\/strong> (main course), and dessert <\/strong>(dessert).\u00a0 You will also see drikker, <\/strong>including alkohol, brus, kaffe, og vann <\/strong>(alcohol, soda, coffee, and water), among other choices.\u00a0 When you have made up your mind, your\u00a0kelner<\/strong> will ask something like, “Er dere klare til \u00e5 bestille?” <\/strong>(Are you-pl. ready to order?)\u00a0 And you will say something to the effect of “Jeg vil ha bakt fjell\u00f8rret med poteter og erter” <\/strong>(I will have baked mountain trout with potatoes and peas).\u00a0<\/p>\n

When your food arrives at your table, your\u00a0kelner<\/strong> will undoubtedly say, v\u00e6r s\u00e5 god <\/strong>(here you are) and you will say takk.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Mmmm…dette smaker veldig godt!\u00a0 <\/strong>Mmmm..this tastes very good!<\/p>\n

Jeg er mett.\u00a0 <\/strong>I am full.<\/p>\n

When you are ready, you will ask your kelner <\/strong>if you can have regningen <\/strong>(the bill).\u00a0<\/p>\n
