{"id":1351,"date":"2011-12-21T12:45:19","date_gmt":"2011-12-21T12:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=1351"},"modified":"2014-08-22T18:13:26","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T18:13:26","slug":"butter-shortage-in-norway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/butter-shortage-in-norway\/","title":{"rendered":"Butter Shortage in Norway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While there are clearly worse things, the recent <strong>s<\/strong><strong>m\u00f8r\u00a0<\/strong>(butter) shortage in Norway is certainly proving to be a big deal for a country that uses as much <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong> as Norway. \u00a0There are seldom meals without a gob of <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong> in them. \u00a0<strong>Sm\u00f8r<\/strong> is a typical ingredient in <strong>sauser<\/strong> (sauces) and in<strong> julebaking<\/strong> (Chistmas baking). \u00a0Traditionally, Norwegians bake 7 different kinds of <strong>sm\u00e5kaker<\/strong> to serve with Christmas dinner. \u00a0No <strong>lefse<\/strong> is complete without a healthy spread of <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong> and <strong>sukker<\/strong> (sugar).<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the following is a typical list of ingredients in <strong>lefse-<\/strong>you\u00b4ll notice quite a lot of <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong> and <strong>sukker<\/strong> are requested.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make about 24 lefse:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5 lbs (2+ kg) or about 10 large\u00a0<strong>potatoes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>3\/4 cup (6 oz)\u00a0<strong>heavy cream<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup melted\u00a0<strong>butter<br \/>\n<\/strong>(= 8 tablespoons or 1\/4 lb or 1 stick)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>1-1\/2 tablespoons\u00a0<strong>sugar<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2 teaspoons\u00a0<strong>salt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>4-5 cups\u00a0<strong>all-purpose flour<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perhaps you have seen an article or heard about it on TV. \u00a0If not, brace yourself, young Norwegians who have secured significant\u00a0access to <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong>, have devised a way to sell it online for $100 per kilo! \u00a0Companies are taking advantage of consumer\u00b4s major desire for <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong> and offering it as incentive to become a member or subscriber. \u00a0Although perhaps annoying for some, it\u00b4s a pretty good business strategy;)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Why, you might ask, does Norway not have any<strong> sm\u00f8r<\/strong> right now? \u00a0There are various reasons behind the <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong> shortage. \u00a0Some below the poor weather in the spring did not yield enough for healthy cows and thus there is less cream to make<strong> sm\u00f8r<\/strong> out of. \u00a0Others blame the<strong> matbutikker<\/strong> (grocery stores) for alleged manufacturing of the shortage. \u00a0Another reason includes the Norwegian governments import duty on <strong>sm\u00f8r<\/strong> and thus inhibiting import of this commodity. \u00a0Last but not least, the low-carb, high-fat diet is quite popular right now. \u00a0All of these reasons have presented Norway with a<strong> sm\u00f8r<\/strong> shortage.<\/p>\n<p>It really is a bummer that this shortage comes right before the holidays, which is the time in Norway when the most<strong> sm\u00f8r<\/strong> is bought and used.<\/p>\n<p>Please find here an entertaining part of the Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN\u00b4s newspaper):<\/p>\n<p>\u00b4<em>Neighboring Scandinavians, perhaps sick and tired of Norway always being &#8220;the richest&#8221; and &#8220;the safest&#8221; and &#8220;the most literate,&#8221; have smugly put on their earmuffs at Norway&#8217;s request for emergency supplies.
