A favorite destination is <strong>hytta<\/strong> (the cabin). Many families keep a cabin or cottage <strong>p\u00e5 fjellet<\/strong> (in the mountains, literally \u2019on the mountain\u2019) or <strong>ved fjorden<\/strong> (at the fjord). These cottages can be everything from primitive huts (where you have to fetch water from a nearby <strong>bekk<\/strong>, \u2019brook\u2019, and light candles in the evening) to luxury chalets with all the facilities of a modern house.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of Norwegians go abroad. The <strong>reisem\u00e5l<\/strong> (destination, literally \u2019travel aim\u2019) of choice for many people is still <strong><a title=\"Nordmenn like the south\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/nordmenn-like-the-south\/\">Syden<\/a><\/strong> (\u201dthe South\u201d) \u2013 in theory any place with crowded beaches, palms, cheap drinks and a realistic chance to get tanned. In practice, though, <strong>Syden<\/strong> means the Mediterranean Countries: <strong>Tyrkia<\/strong> (Turkey), <strong>Hellas<\/strong> (Greece), <strong>Italia<\/strong>, <strong>Spania<\/strong>, <strong>Portugal<\/strong>, <strong>Malta<\/strong>, <strong>Tunisia<\/strong> and a couple of others. In recent years, as Norwegians have become more affluent, the sphere of \u201dordinary people\u2019s\u201d possible vacation whereabouts has grown considerably, comprising such faraway places as South Eastern Asia, Australia, Eastern Africa and South America.<\/p>\n<p>The neighbouring <strong>Danmark<\/strong> is also popular among many <strong>barnefamilier<\/strong> (children\u2019s families), as it has a lot of beaches, cheaper and more readily available <strong>\u00f8l og sigaretter<\/strong> (beer and cigarettes \u2013 for the parents!), and a language quite similar to Norwegian.
