{"id":1442,"date":"2012-08-21T08:08:19","date_gmt":"2012-08-21T08:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=1442"},"modified":"2014-08-22T18:32:57","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T18:32:57","slug":"fjellvettreglene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/fjellvettreglene\/","title":{"rendered":"Fjellvettreglene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hiking in the Norwegian <strong>fjell<\/strong> [fyell] (mountains) can be a dangerous enterprise, especially when it\u2019s late <strong>h\u00f8st<\/strong> (autumn, fall), <strong>vinter<\/strong> and early <strong>v\u00e5r<\/strong> [vor] (spring), and <strong>v\u00e6ret<\/strong> (the weather) can\u2019t make up its mind\u2026 All of a sudden, you can be trapped by a <strong>sn\u00f8storm<\/strong> (snowstorm, blizzard), or forced to climb on rocks that are treachorously slippery in the heavy rain\u2026<\/p>\n<p>With the intention of making hikers more aware of the dangers, and teach them how to avoid them, DNT (Den Norske Turistforening, the Norwegian Tourist Board) launched <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.turistforeningen.no\/article.php?fo_id=3185&amp;ar_id=6451\">fjellvettreglene<\/a><\/strong> [FYELL-vet-reg-leh-neh] a few decades ago. The name rougly means \u201drules of mountain intelligence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The nine rules are as follow:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Legg ikke ut p\u00e5 langtur uten trening.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Meld fra hvor du g\u00e5r.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vis respekt for v\u00e6ret og v\u00e6rmeldingen.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>V\u00e6r rustet mot uv\u00e6r og kulde selv p\u00e5 korte turer. Ta alltid med ryggsekk og det utstyret som fjellet krever.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lytt til erfarne fjellfolk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bruk kart og kompass.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>G\u00e5 ikke alene.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vend i tide. Det er ingen skam \u00e5 snu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Spar p\u00e5 kreftene og grav deg inn i sn\u00f8en om n\u00f8dvendig.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In English, that is:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Don\u2019t embark on a <strong>langtur<\/strong> (long trip, literally \u2019longtrip\u2019) without training [beforehand].<\/li>\n<li>Report where you\u2019re heading.<\/li>\n<li>Show respect for the weather and <strong>v\u00e6rmeldingen<\/strong> (the weather forecast, literally \u2019the weather message\u2019).<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared for <strong>uv\u00e6r<\/strong> (storm, bad weather, literally \u2019unweather\u2019) and cold even on shorter trips. Always bring a <strong>ryggsekk<\/strong> (rucksack, literally \u2019back-bag\u2019) and the equipment that the mountain requires.<\/li>\n<li>Listen to experienced <strong>fjellfolk<\/strong> (mountain people, hikers).<\/li>\n<li>Use a map and a compass.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t walk alone.<\/li>\n<li>Turn back in time. Turning back is no <strong>skam<\/strong> (shame).<\/li>\n<li>Save your energy and dig yourself into the snow if need be.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Notice the verb <strong>\u00e5 snu<\/strong> [oh snoo], which is a really nice Norwegian word for \u201dto turn back\u201d.
