I suppose you\u2019ve already seen the no. 1 of <strong>kongefamilien<\/strong> (the Royal Family) \u2013 <strong>kongen selv<\/strong> (the King himself). On every Norwegian 10 or 20 Kroner coin, the profile of <strong>kong Harald<\/strong> is looking towards the edge. (No, he isn\u2019t completely bald, if you look closer, you\u2019ll see that he\u2019s only got a <strong>m\u00e5ne<\/strong> (bald spot, literally \u2019moon\u2019). On a wholly different note, you should notice how the word <strong>konge<\/strong>, \u2019king\u2019, looses its final \u2019-e\u2019 when used as a title in front of a name.)<\/p>\n<p>Harald is known as a peaceful monarch, who thoughtfully delivers his annual, televised <strong>nytt\u00e5rstale<\/strong> (New Year Speech), and takes his time to answer letters sent to him by <strong>skolebarn<\/strong> (school children). I should probably add that Norway\u2019s a constitutional monarchy; the king has no real power, but serves as a public symbol of the nation (much like the English Queen Elizabeth).<\/p>\n<p>The king lives together with <strong>Dronning Sonja<\/strong> (Queen Sonja, pronounce \u2019Sonya\u2019) at <strong>Slottet<\/strong> \u2013 \u2019The Castle\u2019 in central Oslo. They are both very popular among Norwegians, and spend a lot of time <a title=\"The Norwegian King and Queen Visit the Midwest, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/the-norwegian-king-and-queen-visit-the-midwest-new-york\/\">travelling<\/a> at home and abroad as representatives of Norway. They\u2019ve got two children: <strong>prinsesse M\u00e4rtha Louise<\/strong> [MARE-tah loo-EES] (born in 1971) and <strong>kronprins Haakon<\/strong> [HAWK-on] (born in 1973). Even though Haakon is the youngest one, he\u2019s the <strong>kronprins<\/strong> (crown prince) who\u2019s one day going to take over the throne. (Yes, that\u2019s just because he\u2019s a man\u2026 Full <strong>likestilling<\/strong>, equality between the sexes, hasn\u2019t reached the Norwegian monarchy yet.)<\/p>\n<p>Haakon became <strong>verdensber\u00f8mt<\/strong> (world famous) in 2001, when he married <strong>Mette-Marit<\/strong>, an <strong>alenemor<\/strong> (single-mom) from Kristiansand. A few years ago, such a relationship would have been unheard of in a royal family. Mette-Marit had a son from a former relationship, Marius, and together with Haakon she has got the daughter Ingrid Alexandra and the son Sverre Magnus. They live at the royal residence at Skaugum.<\/p>\n<p>Harald and Sonja once again showed how modern and accepting <strong>foreldre<\/strong> (parents) they were in 2002, when they gave their blessings to M\u00e4rtha Louise\u2019s marriage to Ari Behn, a dandy-like <strong>forfatter<\/strong> (author) who had his breakthrough with a collection of short-stories called <em>Trist som faen<\/em> (<em>Sad as h@ll<\/em>). They\u2019ve since got three daughters: Maud Angelica, Leah Isadora, Emma Tallulah.
