If you\u2019re thinking <strong>Nobels fredspris<\/strong> (the Nobel Peace Prize), you\u2019re absolutely right!<\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks ago, on <strong>den tolvte oktober<\/strong> (October 12th), chairman of <strong>Den norske Nobelkomit\u00e9<\/strong> (The Norwegian Nobel Committee), Thorbj\u00f8rn Jagland\u2013social democrat and former Norwegian prime minister\u2013took <strong>Europa<\/strong> by surprise, proclaiming <strong>EU <\/strong>[eh-oo] this year\u2019s winner of the prestigious prize.<\/p>\n<p>To a lot of <strong>europeere<\/strong> (Europeans) these days, the European Union has become synonymous with <strong>byr\u00e5krati, arbeidsl\u00f8shet<\/strong> (unemployment) and <strong>finanskrise<\/strong> (financial crisis). <strong>Fred<\/strong> (peace) does not seem like the first thing that springs to mind! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, it was the dream of never having to go through another <strong>krig<\/strong> [kreeg] (war) that inspired founding members <strong>Frankrike, Italia, Vesttyskland <\/strong>(Western Germany)<strong>, Nederland, Belgia og Luxemburg <\/strong>to create their \u201dlet\u2019s buy each other\u2019s products\u201d club in 1952. After two <strong>verdenskriger <\/strong>(world wars), the Europeans were tired of seeing France and Germany attacking each other. The idea was that these coutries should be so linked through <strong>handel <\/strong>(trade) that nobody would be interested in warmongering. (You don\u2019t kill your partner, especially not if that means that you lose <strong>penger<\/strong>, money!)<\/p>\n<p>In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-19921072\">announcement<\/a>, Jagland also stressed the way the EU had helped integrate <strong>Spania, Portugal og Hellas<\/strong> (Greece) in Europe after their dictators had fallen in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Norway is not an EU member itself, having said <strong>nei til EU<\/strong> [no to the EU] twice: in 1972 and 1994. To a lot of Norwegians, then, the EU isn\u2019t exactly a <strong>fredsprosjekt<\/strong> (peace project), but rather a bunch of greedy <strong>politikere<\/strong> (politicians) who are trying to curb the individual countries\u2019 <strong>frihet<\/strong> (freedom) and <strong>selvstendighet<\/strong> (independence) in order to create \u201d<strong>Europas forente stater\u201d<\/strong> (\u201dthe US of Europe\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, when the Nobel Prize was given to US president <a title=\"Obama and Nobel\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/obama-and-nobel\/\">Barack Obama<\/a>, many people criticized the Committee, arguing that the Prize had become a political statement rather than an award based on genuine achievement.<\/p>\n<p>How do you feel about the EU winning the Peace Prize?
