\u201d\u00c5 like\u201d [aw LEEkeh] means the same as \u201dto like\u201d, but is pronounced quite differently\u2026<\/p><\/div>In Norway, most people have datamaskiner<\/strong> [DAHtahmasheen-air] (computers) and internett<\/strong>. The Norwegians I know mostly love sosiale medier<\/strong>\u00a0(social media). This might have something to do with Norway being a very long country with a lot of isolated places \u2013 social media is just a handy way to keep in touch with your\u00a0venner<\/b> (friends). It might also have something to do with the climate; when it\u2019s raining or snowing outside, it\u2019s often more tempting \u00e5 skrive en melding<\/strong> (to write a message) than to step out in the cold to say hello to your friend!<\/p>\n

I\u2019m more of an e-mail kind of person myself, so I asked a family member to help me with some useful social media vocabulary.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Fjesboka<\/strong> [FYEHSbohkah], the MugBook, is a Norwegian slang name for Facebook.<\/p>\n

\u2022 How many Facebook-venner<\/strong> (FB friends) have you got?<\/p>\n

\u2022 Er du popul\u00e6r?<\/strong> (Are you popular?) Well, okay, that\u2019s not what it is about, I mean, have you shared a foto<\/strong> or a lenke<\/strong> (link) that a lot of people liker<\/strong>? (Notice that the verb \u00e5 like<\/strong> [aw LEEKeh] is not<\/em><\/span> imported from English; it\u2019s a good ole Norwegian word\u2026)<\/p>\n

Some things you can do on social media:
\n\u2022 \u00e5 sende en melding<\/strong> (to send a message)
\n\u2022 \u00e5 svare<\/strong> (to answer)
\n\u2022 \u00e5 chatte<\/strong> (to chat)
\n\u2022 \u00e5 bli venn med noen<\/strong> (to become somebody\u2019s friend)
\n\u2022 \u00e5 tagge et bilde<\/strong> (to tag a picture)
\n\u2022 \u00e5 dele noe<\/strong> (to share something)
\n\u2022 \u00e5 legge ut noe p\u00e5 veggen<\/strong> (to publish something on your wall)
\n\u2022 \u00e5 oppdatere\/endre\/slette profilen sin<\/strong> (to update\/change\/delete) one\u2019s profil<\/p>\n

Twitter is less popular in Norway than in the US, but there\u2019s already been created a Norwegian word for \u201dto tweet\u201d: \u00e5 kvitre<\/strong> or \u00e5 tvitre<\/strong>.
