The Norwegians I know mostly love <strong>sosiale medier<\/strong>\u00a0(social media). This might have something to do with Norway being a very long country with a lot of isolated places \u2013 social media is just a handy way to keep in touch with your\u00a0<b>venner<\/b> (friends). It might also have something to do with the climate; when it\u2019s raining or snowing outside, it\u2019s often more tempting <strong>\u00e5 skrive en melding<\/strong> (to write a message) than to step out in the cold to say hello to your friend!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m more of an e-mail kind of person myself, so I asked a family member to help me with some useful social media vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Fjesboka<\/strong> [FYEHSbohkah], the MugBook, is a Norwegian slang name for Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 How many <strong>Facebook-venner<\/strong> (FB friends) have you got?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Er du popul\u00e6r?<\/strong> (Are you popular?) Well, okay, that\u2019s not what it is about, I mean, have you shared a <strong>foto<\/strong> or a <strong>lenke<\/strong> (link) that a lot of people <strong>liker<\/strong>? (Notice that the verb <strong>\u00e5 like<\/strong> [aw LEEKeh] is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> imported from English; it\u2019s a good ole Norwegian word\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Some things you can do on social media:<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 sende en melding<\/strong> (to send a message)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 svare<\/strong> (to answer)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 chatte<\/strong> (to chat)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 bli venn med noen<\/strong> (to become somebody\u2019s friend)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 tagge et bilde<\/strong> (to tag a picture)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 dele noe<\/strong> (to share something)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 legge ut noe p\u00e5 veggen<\/strong> (to publish something on your wall)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> \u00e5 oppdatere\/endre\/slette profilen sin<\/strong> (to update\/change\/delete) one\u2019s profil<\/p>\n<p>Twitter is less popular in Norway than in the US, but there\u2019s already been created a Norwegian word for \u201dto tweet\u201d: <strong>\u00e5 kvitre<\/strong> or <strong>\u00e5 tvitre<\/strong>.
