\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>It’s cold!\u00a0 I don’t know about all of you, but I’m here in southern MN and it is truly a winter wonderland today.\u00a0 We’ve had a pretty mild winter so far, but this week the mercury dropped dramatically and the snow began to pile up.\u00a0 Norwegians are experiencing the same v\u00e6r <\/strong>right now.\u00a0 The following is one of the main headlines in a Norwegian avis <\/strong>(newspaper), Aftenposten (aftenposten.no)<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Benytt sjansen i skisporet og akebakken – i morgen kommer minusgradene p\u00e5 \u00d8stlandet. Neste helg kan mildv\u00e6ret komme igjen.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Take advantage of the chance\u00a0to ski and sled-tomorrow sub-zero temperatures will come to Eastern Norway.\u00a0 Next weekend mild weather might come back.”<\/p>\n

You\u00a0might notice that my translation is not a direct translation from the Norwegian.\u00a0 In case you are curious, the following would be the direct translation:\u00a0 Take advantage of the chance\u00a0in the ski path and sledding hill-tomorrow comes minus degrees in the eastland.\u00a0 Next weekend can mild weather come again.<\/p>\n

Which one makes more sense?\u00a0 The loose translation, right?\u00a0 Like all foreign languages, Norwegian can almost never be directly translated.\u00a0 It’s simply impossible\u00a0to expect\u00a0two languages to employ the exact same grammar rules.<\/p>\n

So, back to the cold.\u00a0 Det er kaldt!<\/strong>\u00a0 It is cold.\u00a0 Det sn\u00f8r<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is snowing.\u00a0 Det er is p\u00e5 veiene.\u00a0 <\/strong>There is ice on the roads.\u00a0 And just to clarify, when the Norwegian newspaper writes that the temperature is going to be sub-zero….it means below 0 degrees celsius, so below 32 degrees F.\u00a0 I don’t feel so bad for them.\u00a0 It was 8 degrees F here yesterday and it’s supposed to actually drop below 0 F.\u00a0 Yikes!!<\/p>\n

It is believed that Norwegians are born with skis on their feet.\u00a0 I think every Norwegian that I met while I lived\u00a0in Oslo\u00a0skis.\u00a0 Both alpine and nordic.\u00a0 Young and old, big and small, everyone.\u00a0 In fact, I had quite an embarressing experience while skiing in Oslo.\u00a0 My friend and I decided to rent nordic skis for the semester.\u00a0 The very first time we were\u00a0out the weather conditions\u00a0were unfavorable\u00a0for skiing.\u00a0 It was a little too warm, so slushy icewater got stuck to the bottom of our skis and froze so we couldn’t move on them.\u00a0 We were halfway around a lake, so we had to pick up our skis and carry them back to the starting point.\u00a0 It was not a fun experience.\u00a0 The second and last time we skiied we got passed by an old man that looked about 100 years old, just truckin’ along.\u00a0 We felt so defeated that decided we were done.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The truth is that nordic skiing is much harder than alpine.\u00a0 You have gravity on your side with alpine skiing!\u00a0 I actually plan \u00e5 g\u00e5 p\u00e5 ski<\/strong> tonight.\u00a0 The only downfall is that in Minnesota we don’t exactly have mountains, so small hills have to suffice.\ufffd<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
