I think of &#8216;peace&#8217; because in today&#8217;s world, it seems as though the latter is a word used more often than &#8216;preservation.&#8217;\u00a0 The word &#8216;<strong>fred<\/strong>&#8216; and all it&#8217;s forms (verb-<strong>\u00e5 frede<\/strong>, adjective-<strong>fredelig,<\/strong> noun<strong>-fredning<\/strong>) have several meanings and it took a dictionary to remind me that &#8216;<strong>fredet<\/strong>&#8216; could mean &#8216;preserved,&#8217; rather than something referring directly to &#8216;peace.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In any case, my initial reaction to the title of the article is unimportant; what is <strong>viktig<\/strong> (important) is J\u00f8rn Holme&#8217;s passion for preservation of Norwegian cultural heritage.\u00a0 Holme has worked\u00a0as a\u00a0police inspector, a judge, a public prosecutor, has written and edited\u00a0books, and has been very involved in politics.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0After reading Holme&#8217;s bio, it is clear that he and Riksantikvaret (the Directorate for Cultural Heritage) are very interested in the preservation of monuments that represent Norwegian cultural heritage and the history of communication in Norway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Halvparten av de 40 veiene som Holmes har fredet brukes daglig, mens den andre halvparten er &#8220;ute av drift.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0 Half of the 40 roads that Holmes has preserved are used daily, but the other half are out of youth.\u00a0 Preserving these roads protects\u00a0an important part of\u00a0Norway&#8217;s communications history.\u00a0 Holmes was quoted in the article saying <strong>&#8220;De viser ingeni\u00f8rkunst og ulike tekniske l\u00f8sninger i ulike perioder&#8221;<\/strong> (They show engineering and different technical solutions in different periods.&#8221;\u00a0 Holmes also stated that in the future there will be <strong>skilt <\/strong>(signs) with informasjon about the significance for preserving each road.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of the roads\u00a0that are p\u00e5 listen (on the list):\u00a0 keep in mind <strong>kommune<\/strong> means municipality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>B\u00f8rselvfjellet, Lebesby og Porsanger kommuner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>-Gammelveien i \u00d8ksfjord, Loppa kommune <\/strong>(<strong>Gammelveien<\/strong> means &#8221;old road&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Carl Johans vei, Verdal kommune <\/strong>(not to be confused with <strong>Karl Johans Vei<\/strong>, the main street in Oslo)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Storbrua \u2013 Rislandsfeta, \u00c5mli kommune <\/strong>(means &#8221;big bridge&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Korketrekkeren, Modum kommune <\/strong>(means &#8221;The Corkscrew&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Here is the web address of the article in Aftenposten online:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aftenposten.no\/forbruker\/bil\/article3506970.ece\">http:\/\/www.aftenposten.no\/forbruker\/bil\/article3506970.ece<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think the road in this picture should be on the list.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a picture of a road my friend and I took to drive down from near Troms\u00f8 to Oslo.\u00a0 It crosses <strong>Polarsirkelen<\/strong> (the polar circle)!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you think?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"263\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2010\/02\/img_0033-350x263.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2010\/02\/img_0033-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2010\/02\/img_0033-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2010\/02\/img_0033-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2010\/02\/img_0033.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>Directorate of Cultural Heritage, J\u00f8rn Holme, has preserved 40 Norwegian roads.\u00a0 This\u00a0was a headline in the Aftenposten online newspaper yesterday.\u00a0 I was initially intrigued by the title of the article because when I think of the word &#8216;fred,&#8217;
