Just consider the following examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 You want to tell somebody about your favourite book. But should it be <b>min bok<\/b>, <b>boken min<\/b> or <b><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/the-third-gender\/\">boka mi<\/a><\/b>?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 You and your friends want to order seven drinks. Should you ask for <b>sju<\/b> or <b>syv<\/b>, or just give up and order <b>\u00e5tte<\/b>?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 You want to tell someone you like them. But how should you introduce yourself without sounding like a wannabe native: <b>jeg<\/b>, <b><i><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/norwegian-egozones\/\">je, i, eg, \u00e6<\/a>\u2026<\/i><\/b>?<\/p>\n<p>As language learners, we want quick fixes. We want 1 spelling for <em>n<\/em><i>either \u2026 nor<\/i>. Then our dictionary tells us that it can be either <b>verken \u2026 eller<\/b> <i>or<\/i> <b>hverken \u2026 eller<\/b>. (Image from openclipart.org.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But here is the thing\u2026 Learn one word at a time, and use it! Pick the easy solutions \u2013 you are not going to sound like a Native from day 1 anyway! For example, if you find it difficult remembering which words are feminine, stick to masculine forms (<b>boken <\/b>and <b>solen<\/b> or <b>boka <\/b>and <b>sola<\/b>). Noone is going to hate you; people tend to be very understanding and helpful towards language learners.<\/p>\n<p>If you are living in a Norwegian town and are planning to stay for a long time, talk to the people around you, learn their dialect! \ud83d\ude42 Otherwise, just stick to the words and forms of the written language \u2013 which is often <b><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/a-taste-of-nynorsk\/\">bokm\u00e5l<\/a><\/b> Norwegian (as in this blog).<\/p>\n<p>Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/norwegians-speak-dialects\/\">dialect<\/a> speakers of countries like England or Germany, Norwegians rarely switch to a \u201dstandard language\u201d when talking with people from elsewhere. So, if you\u2019re hanging out with a group of Norwegians and finding yourself misunderstood (maybe you got the pronunciation wrong?), you may be met with many different \u201dwhats\u201d<i>: <\/i><b><i>Hva (sier du), K\u00e6 (seie du), Ka (du sei)?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>English-speakers from Scotland and California don\u2019t use exactly the same words or pronunciaton, but they can still communicate. If possible, spend some time in Norway, listen to Norwegian radio stations. In a while, all the \u201dgibberish\u201d will make sense\u2026 Remember, you don\u2019t have to speak 5 different dialects <i>yourself<\/i> \u2013 just to get the gist of what <b>folk sier <\/b>(people are saying).<\/p>\n<p>So,<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 pick your favo(u)rites<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 keep it simple<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 accept that Variety is there to stay<\/p>\n<p>Now, go ahead and meet that monster.
