When it doesn\u2019t rain, Bergen is probably Norway\u2019s most vakker<\/b> (beautiful) city. I recently had a chance to revisit Bergen. Having studied there, I have to smile when the city\u2019s hjemmeside<\/b> [yem-] (homepage<\/a>) writes: Byen hadde 235 regndager i 2014 – og innbyggerne er stolte av det.<\/b> (The city had 235 days of rain in 2014 \u2013 and the inhabitants are proud of it.) \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Kari has already written a nice post<\/a> about de syv fjell<\/b> (the seven mountains) and the history of Bergen. So I thought maybe you\u2019d like to read something else about Norway\u2019s second largest city\u2026<\/p>\n

Most turister<\/b> visit Bergen during summer, where there may be several weeks where all you can say is: V\u00e6ret er nydelig!<\/b> (The weather is gorgeous!) If you stay some time, however, you\u2019ll understand why Bergen is one of world\u2019s few places which has its own paraplyreparat\u00f8r<\/b> (umbrella service mechanic)\u2026<\/p>\n

Bergensere<\/b> are known to be a bit more \u2026 boisterous than your typical Norwegian, and their dialect is quite catchy because of the strong skarre-r<\/b>. Most Norwegian courses teach the Oslo rulle-r<\/b>, which is an r<\/b> made by the tip of your tongue, as in Spanish. To practise your bergensk<\/b>, however, you\u2019d better do some French-style gargling! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Maybe due to the international trade during middelalderen <\/b>(the Middle Ages) \u2013 when German traders known as hanseatene<\/b> settled there \u2013 the city has many special traditions. Only in Bergen you\u2019ll find young people that put on uniforms to peacefully march in the so-called buekorps<\/b> brigades. As far as I know, the Bergen Hansa<\/b> beer has a more \u201dcontinental\u201d taste than other Norwegian beers. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

The birthplace of world-famous composer Edvard Grieg<\/b>, Bergen is a city of musikk<\/b>. Every summer the big Festspillene <\/b>festival attracts both classical and modern musicians. A very famous singer from Bergen is Sissel Kyrkjeb\u00f8<\/b>. There are also a lot of bands from Bergen, for example R\u00f8yksopp<\/b>.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve read the crime stories of Bergen writer Gunnar Staalesen<\/b>, you\u2019ll know that Bergen isn\u2019t always a safe place to be\u2026 \ud83d\ude42 Nonetheless, a whole bunch of people can\u2019t imagine ever living elsewhere, including Norway\u2019s most famous cartoon character, the bergenser<\/b> Pondus<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
