Did you know a Norwegian movie inspired Star Wars? After the last post about \u00f8velseskj\u00f8ring<\/b><\/a> it\u2019s time to highlight one of Norway\u2019s biggest adventures of biler<\/b> (cars) and kj\u00e6rlighet<\/b> (love) \u2013 Fl\u00e5klypa Grand Prix <\/b>(FLAWkleepah grannPREE)!<\/p>\n

On the top of a fjellknaus<\/b> (\u201dmountain hill\u201d) \u2013 where the morning sun rises above the Big Gorge (der morrasola renner opp over Storjuvet<\/b>) <\/b>\u2013 lives the sykkelreparat\u00f8r<\/b> (bike mechanic) Reodor Felgen<\/b>. He spends his time making wonderful oppfinnelser<\/b>\u00a0(inventions) and talking with his two good friends, den gl\u00f8gge<\/b> (the bright) Solan<\/b> and den treige<\/b> (the slow) Ludvig<\/b>. Then one day as the three watch fjernsyn<\/b> (television) they discover that Reodor\u2019s former apprentice Rudolf Blodstrupmoen<\/b> is a very successful rally driver \u2013 with the help of a genius motor<\/b> which was originally designed by Reodor! They decide to challenge Blodstrupmoen and his Arab sponsor in the bill\u00f8p<\/b> (rally) of the century\u2026 In order to win, Reodor has to make the fastest car ever known, \u201dIl Tempo Gigante\u201d. It\u2019s so hurtig<\/b> (fast) that asfalten kr\u00f8ller seg<\/b> (the asphalt curls) behind it!<\/p>\n

Solan <\/b>looks like a black and<\/b> (duck) and Ludvig<\/b> looks like a troll<\/b> and yes, Fl\u00e5klypa<\/b> is a dukkefilm<\/b> (stop motion movie with tiny models, literally \u201ddoll film\u201d). If you haven\u2019t seen it yet, you should! \ud83d\ude42 Since it was first shown in 1975, noone has been able to duplicate the excitement of the race or director Ivo Caprino\u2019s<\/b> fun characters. In fact, George Lucas admittedly based the pod race in \u201dThe Phantom Menace\u201d (Star Wars 1) very much<\/i> on Fl\u00e5klypa! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Fl\u00e5klypa<\/b> is the most watched Norwegian movie to date, and you can see it in many languages. Here is an English versio<\/a>n<\/em>. If you\u2019re a hard core fan, though, you have to see it in Norwegian. The film is based on writings by the humorist Kjell Aukrust<\/b>, and many phrases are in dialect and difficult to translate. All Norwegians know such classic quotes as Solan\u2019s<\/p>\n
