{"id":25,"date":"2009-01-05T08:34:21","date_gmt":"2009-01-05T12:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=25"},"modified":"2009-01-05T08:34:21","modified_gmt":"2009-01-05T12:34:21","slug":"nordmenn-like-the-south","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/nordmenn-like-the-south\/","title":{"rendered":"Nordmenn like the south"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><strong>Nordmenn liker syden<\/strong> (Nordmenn like the south)&#8230;&#8230;of Europe that is.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure how many Norwegians travel to what Americans refer to as the south, but they talk about going to <span style=\"font-family: Verdana\"><strong>syden <\/strong><\/span>all the time. <span style=\"font-family: Verdana\"><strong>Syden <\/strong><\/span>for Norwegians can mean destinations from Mallorca in Spain, to Rhodes in Greece, to the Grand Canary Islands, to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.\u00a0 Most often when Norwegians travel south, they hit up somewhere in the vicinity of the Mediterranean. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 7.5pt;font-family: Verdana;color: #000000\">Many of you have perhaps ventured south of our border to Mexico for spring break.\u00a0 From what I understand, Norwegians travelling to southern Europe is a similar endeavor.\u00a0 There are several areas in southern Europe, a few of which I mentioned above, that are hot-spots for Norwegians, much like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, and Acapulco are for Americans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 7.5pt;font-family: Verdana;color: #000000\">The tradition of <span style=\"font-family: Verdana\"><strong>\u00e5 reise til syden <\/strong><\/span>(to travel to the south) began for Norwegians 50 years ago.\u00a0 35 Norwegian passengers boarded a plane for Mallorca, Spain.\u00a0\u00a0The trip\u00a0cost each passenger roughly 11,000 NOK (1,600 US Dollars) and 7.5 hours flying time to enjoy the adventure.\u00a0 50 years ago 11,000 NOK was a lot of money to spend for a vacation.\u00a0 Obviously\u00a0a trip like this\u00a0was quite a luxury.\u00a0 Today, however, the income gap in Norway is mcuh narrower and the majority of Norwegians can afford <span style=\"font-family: Verdana\"><strong>\u00e5 reise til syden<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Even my Norwegian relatives in their 70s travel to southern Europe, not only to relax in the sun <span style=\"font-family: Verdana\"><strong>(kose seg i solen),<\/strong><\/span> but to climb mountains and experience exotic food.\u00a0 Norwegians have really developed a sense of adventure and travel in the last few decades.\u00a0 I imagine this desire to get out and see the world developed from a long history of a homogenous people dominated by others.\u00a0 Now that Norwegians have the funds and the freedom, they want to enjoy the pleasures of life closer to the equator just like those of us that inhabit the northerly latitudes of the United States. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 7.5pt;font-family: Verdana;color: #000000\">The thermometer is hovering around zero this morning here in southern Minnesota.\u00a0 I went for a run yesterday and my bottom and top eyelashes froze together.\u00a0 I had insulated pants on and although I was going at a good clip and felt warm internally, my thighs were numb five minutes into the run.\u00a0 I was in Florida for a few days over Christmas, so luckily I\u00a0enjoyed\u00a0a short reprieve from winter in MN.\u00a0 However, it does not take long for\u00a0the body to return to the state that forgets what natural warmth feels like. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 7.5pt;font-family: Verdana;color: #000000\">To be perfectly honest, I wish that travelling south for people like me could be as cheap and easy as Norwegians travelling to <span style=\"font-family: Verdana\"><strong>syden<\/strong><\/span> because I would much rather enjoy a break from winter in southern Europe.\u00a0 There is something about travelling to a foreign country and being surrounded by other tourists speaking my language and wanting to do all of the same things as me that just has no appeal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Alle sammen trenger sol og ferie. <\/strong>Everyone needs sun and vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nordmenn liker syden (Nordmenn like the south)&#8230;&#8230;of Europe that is.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure how many Norwegians travel to what Americans refer to as the south, but they talk about going to syden all the time.
