Asking about somebody\u2019s f\u00f8dselsdag<\/strong><\/a> (birthday) might not be the first thing you do. Still, when the topic does pop up, it\u2019s good to be prepared! \ud83d\ude42 Otherwise, the knowledge of how to say datoer<\/strong> (dates) could come handy when planning \u2026 dates.<\/p>\n

You can ask the question itself in two different ways \u2013 both meaning \u201dwhen\u2019s your birthday\u201d:
\nN\u00e5r er bursdagen din? <\/strong>(Also: N\u00e5r har du bursdag?<\/strong>)
\nN\u00e5r er f\u00f8dselsdagen din?<\/strong>
\nSome would say bursdag<\/strong> is a bit more colloquial or \u201deveryday-ish\u201d.<\/p>\n

As you probably know, there are tolv m\u00e5neder<\/strong> (twelve months), also in Norwegian! \ud83d\ude42 The names are quite similar to the English ones, except that they don\u2019t start with a capital letter (unless at the beginning of a new sentence!)

As you can see, writing<\/em> dates in Norwegian is kjempelett<\/strong> (super easy) \u2013 even easier than in English! \ud83d\ude42 In order to pronounce them, we need ordenstallene<\/strong><\/a> (the ordinal numbers) from 1 to 31. Since we\u2019re talking about specific dates (\u201dthe<\/em> 6th of January\u201d rather than \u201da<\/em> 6th of January\u201d), all the ordenstall<\/strong> take the e-<\/strong> ending<\/a> \u2013 so it is f\u00f8rste<\/strong> instead of f\u00f8rst<\/strong>. (You do remember this ending for adjectives etc. describing specific nouns, right? Think en r\u00f8d hatt<\/strong> \u201da red hat\u201d vs. den r\u00f8de hatten <\/strong>\u201dthe red hat\u201d.)<\/em><\/p>\n

\nsjette, syvende, \u00e5ttende, niende, tiende<\/strong>
\nellevte, tolvte, trettende, fjortende, femtende<\/strong>
\nsekstende, syttende, attende, nittende, tjuende <\/strong>(or tyvende<\/strong>)
\ntjuef\u00f8rste, tjueandre, tjuetredje, tjuefjerde, tjuefemte<\/strong>
\ntjuesjette, tjuesyvende, tjue\u00e5ttende, tjueniende, trettiende<\/strong>
\ntrettif\u00f8rste<\/strong>
\nWatch out: <\/em>The dates may appear with or without the word den<\/strong> (the) in front\u2026 When speaking about Norway\u2019s birthday<\/a>, for example, den 17. mai<\/strong> sounds a lot more formal than just 17. mai <\/strong>for \u201dMay 17th\u201d.<\/p>\n

Other things you could answer:
