Mange \u00f8nsket seg en hvit jul i 2020.<\/strong> (Many people were wishing for a white Christmas in 2020.) Only this month, however, sn\u00f8en<\/strong> (the snow) decided to grace large parts of Norge<\/strong>. Let\u2019s get outside and have some fun!<\/p>\n

Det er ikke s\u00e5 vanskelig \u00e5 g\u00e5 p\u00e5 sk\u00f8yter <\/strong>[shoyter].<\/strong> (Ice skating is not that hard.) You only need gode sk\u00f8yter<\/strong> (good skates) and islagt vann <\/strong>(ice-covered water). Remember to check om isen er trygg<\/strong> (if the ice is safe). A perfectly glatt<\/strong> (slippery) surface is called st\u00e5lis<\/strong> (\u2019steel ice\u2019) in Norwegian, and it needs a depth of at least 10 cm (4 inches) to safely carry an adult. \ud83d\ude42 Be sure to bring friends or family, so you can help each other holde balansen<\/strong> (keep your balance). Quick tip: Bring a sparkst\u00f8tting<\/strong> (kicksled) as a mobile seat if your legs start hurting and you need a pause<\/strong> [pavseh].<\/p>\n

Sk\u00f8yting<\/strong> [shoyting] is even a skiing<\/a> technique! You keep your feet and your ski<\/strong> [she] (skis) in a V shape as you move forward, putting your weight on alternatively your right and your left fot<\/strong> [foot] and sliding a little bit outwards to either side, as if you were skating on ice. If you\u2019re running downhill or in preparerte l\u00f8yper<\/strong> (prepared ski runs), you of course keep your skis neatly parallel and use your staver<\/strong> (ski sticks) to move on. \ud83d\ude42 Brems<\/strong> (brake) by moving skituppene <\/strong>(the \u201dpointy ends\u201d of your skis) towards each other or by quickly changing direction. Of course, if you\u2019re not doing cross-country skiing (langrenn<\/strong>) and prefer \u00e5 kj\u00f8re slal\u00e5m<\/strong> (slaloming) in a skisenter<\/strong><\/a> with an automatic skitrekk <\/strong>(ski lift), it\u2019s a wholly different story! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

For lazy people (such as this blogger), there are certainly less sweaty ways to enjoy sn\u00f8en<\/strong> (the snow). Lie down on your back and fling your arms and legs about like Jonas Fjeld and Lynni Treekrem in their evergreen Engler i sneen<\/strong> (sne<\/strong> is an alternative spelling of sn\u00f8<\/strong>; Wiki says<\/a> Judy Collins made an English cover, \u201dAngels in the Snow\u201d):<\/p>\n
