Since you read this blog last month, a horrible krig<\/strong> [kreeg] (war) has broken out in the midst of Europa<\/strong>. Let\u2019s all hope and wish it will end as soon and as peacefully as humanly possible. Verden trenger fred.<\/strong> (The world needs peace.) And we need to be able to communicate respectfully and try to understand each other, even if we don\u2019t always agree \u2013 isn\u2019t that why we\u2019re language learners, after all?<\/p>\n

Learning, however, isn\u2019t easy when your mind is full of frykt<\/strong> (fear). Focusing on nice and even nerdy things is, I think, the way forward. With that in mind, here are some things I like about Norwegian:<\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00c6, \u00d8 and \u00c5!<\/a> How can other languages cope without those beautiful letters?<\/p>\n

\u2022 The language can be written in two different ways, bokm\u00e5l <\/strong>(book language) and nynorsk<\/strong><\/a> (New Norwegian). Yes, I know this is frustrating to language learners. Yet this constant focus on two different spelling systems, with slightly different vocabularies, adds a lot of vitality to the Norwegian language scene.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Norwegian has lots of nice words that match its wild landscape<\/a>, such as seter<\/strong> (place of mountain pasture) and li <\/strong>[lee] (the slope of a ridge or valley).<\/p>\n

\u2022 Unlike most European languages, Norwegian is a tonal<\/a> language. This gives it a unique melodic quality, as if its speakers were singing rather than talking.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Norwegians excel at inventing their own translations<\/a> for international anglicisms. What is a \u201dnet board\u201d (nettbrett<\/strong>)? It\u2019s a tablet, of course\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2022 The little word kos<\/strong><\/a> (\u2248 \u201dcosiness\u201d) says everything about the joys of stay-at-home family life in a cold climate.<\/p>\n
