{"id":351,"date":"2010-05-16T14:19:54","date_gmt":"2010-05-16T14:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=351"},"modified":"2010-05-16T14:19:54","modified_gmt":"2010-05-16T14:19:54","slug":"syttende-mai-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/syttende-mai-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Syttende mai 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_352\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2010\/05\/IMG_0107.jpg\" aria-label=\"IMG 0107 225x300\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-352\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-352\" title=\"IMG_0107\"  alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2010\/05\/IMG_0107-225x300.jpg\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">just a portion of the frokost spread<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also known as <strong>Nasjonaldagen<\/strong> (National Day) and <strong>Grunnlovsdagen<\/strong> (Constitution Day).<\/p>\n<p>Since I have already written several posts about <strong>syttende mai<\/strong>, I will direct you to those for more information.\u00a0 They were posted on <strong>fjortende mai<\/strong> (May 14) and <strong>sekstende mai<\/strong> (May 16) of 2009.\u00a0 For those of you who are either unfamiliar with this <strong>helligdag<\/strong>\u00a0(holiday) or just\u00a0don&#8217;t feel like rummaging through the archives to find the earlier posts, I&#8217;ll tell you a bit about <strong>syttende mai<\/strong> and why the whole country of Norway is full of parades, music, food, and national costume on this day every year.<\/p>\n<p>Following a nearly 400 year union with Denmark,\u00a0the Norwegian\u00a0Independence movement successfully\u00a0drafted Norway&#8217;s\u00a0very own\u00a0<strong>grunnlov <\/strong>(constitution), signed\u00a0May 17,\u00a01814 in Eidsvoll, Norway.\u00a0 <strong>Den norske grunnloven<\/strong>\u00a0(The Norweigan constitution) is\u00a0one of the world&#8217;s most radically democratic constitutions. It resembled both the constitutions of the French and the\u00a0United States\u00a0of America, except that Norway retained <strong>monarkiet<\/strong> (the monarchy), although a system of checks and balances deprived the king of absolute power.\u00a0 Dig this: the Norwegian <strong>grunnlov<\/strong> is the oldest in Europe and the second oldest in the world that is still in use today!<\/p>\n<p>4 centuries under the rule of the Danish and one signed\u00a0<strong>grunnlov<\/strong> later,\u00a0<strong>nordmenn<\/strong> have ample reason to\u00a0<strong>feire<\/strong> (celebrate)\u00a0this day every year, much like I and my fellow Americans <strong>feirer<\/strong> July 4.\u00a0 Besides the <strong>fyrverkeri <\/strong>(fireworks), I don&#8217;t believe our celebrations even come close to <strong>syttende mai<\/strong> celebrations.\u00a0 Every community (or several join together) in Norway gathers to celebrate.\u00a0 If you every have the opportunity to go, just beware that you will likely stand out because you probably don&#8217;t have a <strong>bunad<\/strong>.\u00a0 A bunad is a national costume of rural origin that Norwegians wear on important <strong>helligdager<\/strong>.\u00a0 I think <strong>bunader<\/strong> deserve their own post at a later date&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>So, unfortunately <strong>syttende mai<\/strong> falls on a <strong>mandag<\/strong> this year, which makes it difficult to attend activities for those of us who work.\u00a0 But, maybe you&#8217;re lucky like me and can attend an early <strong>frokost<\/strong> (breakfast) before work!\u00a0 I live just down the street from St. Olaf College, where the Norwegian department hosts a gigantic <strong>frokost<\/strong> every year for hundreds of people, both students and community members.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We eat <strong>vafler<\/strong> (waffles), <strong>br\u00f8d med p\u00e5legg<\/strong> (bread with toppings) like <strong>ost <\/strong>(cheese), <strong>syltet\u00f8y<\/strong> (jam), <strong>egg<\/strong>, <strong>tomat<\/strong>, og <strong>fisk<\/strong>!\u00a0 <strong>Vi spiser, drikker, synger, og\u00a0prater<\/strong> (We eat, drink, sing, and chat).<\/p>\n<p>Check out what&#8217;s going on around you.\u00a0 Maybe there is a <strong>konsert<\/strong> you could attend Monday evening.\u00a0 Maybe there is a <strong>lunsj<\/strong> somewhere.\u00a0 I know there are parades going on today, as well as church services.
