beer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I really like <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> (beer) and unfortunately when I lived in Norway, I lived on a very tight budget and therefore rarely splurged on\u00a0<strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> of any higher <strong>kvalitet<\/strong> (quality) than the <strong>billigste<\/strong> (cheapest).\u00a0 Nevertheless, I enjoyed my\u00a0<strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> consumption during my time in Norway, especially since I\u00a0could drink <strong>lovlig<\/strong> (legally) before my 21st <strong>bursdag<\/strong>!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I drank a lot of pilsners of the pale lager type, which definitely seems\u00a0to be the\u00a0most prevalent\u00a0<strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> in Norway, as in the rest of the western world.\u00a0 There are certainly darker lagers and ales, wheat beers, and bock beers, but by far the majority of <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> in Norway are pilsners, or bottom-fermenting.\u00a0 If you like\u00a0<strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> and you are learning <strong>norsk<\/strong>, you are maybe interested in learning some terms related to <strong>\u00f8l p\u00e5 norsk<\/strong>.\u00a0 The following is a list of bottom-fermenting <strong>\u00f8l p\u00e5 norsk:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>lett\u00f8l<\/strong>: low-alcohol pale lager<\/p>\n<p><strong>pils:<\/strong> over 90% of <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> brewed in Norway, the standard pale and lightly hoppy<\/p>\n<p><strong>bayer\u00f8l<\/strong>:\u00a0the first <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> brewed in Norway, which has died out significantly, is a semi- dark, lightly hoppy lager<\/p>\n<p><strong>bokk\u00f8l<\/strong>:\u00a0bittersweet, dark, strong lager<\/p>\n<p><strong>lyst sterk\u00f8l<\/strong>: full-body, heavy hopped pale lager<\/p>\n<p><strong>jule\u00f8l<\/strong>: dark, amber lager brewed specially for <strong>jul<\/strong> (Christmas)<\/p>\n<p><strong>m\u00e4rzen<\/strong>: amber lager<\/p>\n<p><strong>v\u00f8rter\u00f8l<\/strong>: &#8221;wart&#8221; beer, non-alcoholic<\/p>\n<p><strong>fat\u00f8l<\/strong>: pale lager<\/p>\n<p>Of the above-named <strong>\u00f8l, Jule\u00f8l, lyst sterk\u00f8l<\/strong>, and <strong>bokk\u00f8l<\/strong> contain the most alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Norsk \u00f8l produksjon<\/strong> (Norwegian beer production) is a long-standing tradition dating back over 1000 years when almost every farm had a <strong>bryggehus<\/strong> (brew house) to brew tasty, <strong>hjemmelaget \u00f8l<\/strong> (homemade beer).\u00a0 Since this is an <strong>ulovlig <\/strong>(illegal) practice, it is of course unknown how many people still do this.\u00a0 It is known, however, that more people distill their own spirits than their own <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can find <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> at most <strong>matbutikker <\/strong>(grocery stores), but if you want \u00f8l that has a higher alcohol content than 4.7%, you have to go to a state-run <strong>vinmonopol<\/strong> (literally &#8221;wine monopoly&#8221;) for your purchase since the sale\u00a0highly alcoholic beverages\u00a0is more regualted.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 20 <strong>bryggerier<\/strong> (breweries) in Norway today, a siginifcantly lower number than decades ago.\u00a0 Bigger companies buy smaller companies out, you know the story.\u00a0 The two largest <strong>bryggerier<\/strong> are <em>Carlsberg-Ringnes<\/em> and <em>Hansa-Borg<\/em> and they control over 85% of the\u00a0<strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> market in Norway.\u00a0 <em>Ringnes<\/em> is originally from Oslo (and is still brewed there), but is now owned by the Danish company <em>Carlsberg<\/em>.\u00a0<em> Hansa<\/em> is brewed in Bergen.\u00a0 <strong>Aas<\/strong> is a <strong>bryggeri<\/strong> in Drammen, not too far outside of Oslo.\u00a0 <em>Mack<\/em> is a kind of \u00f8l brewed in Troms\u00f8 and is in fact the northernmost <strong>bryggeri <\/strong>in the whole world.\u00a0 <em>Frydenlund<\/em> is another big name, another <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> brewed in Oslo.\u00a0 I know I tried <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> from all of these <strong>bryggerier<\/strong>, except maybe <em>Mack<\/em> from Troms\u00f8, so that&#8217;s something to look forward to!<\/p>\n<p>Chances are I&#8217;ll write about <strong>\u00f8l<\/strong> in Norway again, but for now, this should wet your palette and make you <strong>t\u00f8rst <\/strong>(thirsty) for some norsk brew!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"263\"
