It is my personal belief that the Norwegian language is more logical than English-it just makes more sense to me. \u00a0I’ve said before that I had a native Norwegian professor in college who said that the Norwegian language is barbaric, it’s simple. \u00a0She is absolutely right. \u00a0I would like to share a list of words with you that I think exemplify this opinion.<\/p>\n
-flyplass<\/strong> (airport) literally translates to “plane place”<\/p>\n –tannlege<\/strong> (dentist) literally translates to “tooth doctor”<\/p>\n –skrivebord<\/strong> (desk) literally translates to “write table”<\/p>\n –<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong>(improve) literally translates to “for better”<\/p>\n –sommerfugl<\/strong> (butterly) literally translates to “summer bird”–ok this one isn’t so obvious, but “summer bird” makes more sense than “butterfly”<\/p>\n –h\u00f8sttakkfest <\/strong>(Thanksgiving) literally translates to “fall thanks fest”<\/p>\n –lovbrudd <\/strong>(offense) literally translates to “law break”<\/p>\n –lastebil <\/strong>(truck) literally translates to “load car”<\/p>\n –frokostblanding<\/strong> (cereal) literally translates to “breakfast mixture”<\/p>\n –avreise<\/strong> (departure) literally translates to “off travel” or “from travel”<\/p>\n –helligdag<\/strong> (holiday) means “holy day,” and while all holidays aren’t religious, it makes more sense to me to combine two actual words \u00a0(holy and day)<\/p>\n –ordbok<\/strong> (dictionary) literally translates to “word book”<\/p>\n –datamaskin<\/strong> (computer) literally translates to “data machine” (as is fairly obvious…)<\/p>\n –gressklipper <\/strong>(lawn mower) literally translates to “grass cutter.” \u00a0Why create more words, such as mow? \u00a0And you don’t really cut the whole lawn, just the grass.<\/p>\n –f\u00f8rskole<\/strong> (nursery school) literally translates to “before school”<\/p>\n –medhjelper <\/strong>(assistant) literally translates to “with helper”<\/p>\n –tresko<\/strong> (clog) literally translates to “wooden shoe”<\/p>\n –n\u00e5levende<\/strong> (contemporary) literally translates to “now living”<\/p>\n –etterkommer <\/strong>(descendant) literally translates to “after comer”<\/p>\n What do you think? \u00a0It sure seems like we have created a lot more words than we really need. \u00a0How come we didn’t combine more words to form compound words like Norwegian?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" It is my personal belief that the Norwegian language is more logical than English-it just makes more sense to me. \u00a0I’ve said before that I had a native Norwegian professor in college who said that the Norwegian language is barbaric, it’s simple. \u00a0She is absolutely right. \u00a0I would like to share a list of words…<\/p>\n
