Peter Christen Asbj\u00f8rnsen<\/em> (1812-1885)and J\u00f8rgen Engebretesen Moe <\/em>(1813-1882)-the names that have become synonymous with Norwegian folkeeveyntyr<\/strong> (folktales). \u00a0The two had been friends since their early teen years and later went on to collect folkeeventyr<\/strong> and edit them into a compilation that would forever impact Norwegian culture.<\/p>\n

Asbj\u00f8rnsen<\/em> was a writer and scholar from Christiania<\/em> (old name for Oslo) who began to write down folk legends when he was 20 years old at the University of Oslo. \u00a0He traveled the entire length of Norway (which in that time-especially-would have been quite a long and time-consuming journey) collecting legends. \u00a0His old childhood pal, J\u00f8rgen Moe,<\/em> a bishop and authorfrom Ringerike<\/em>, as it turns out, had begun to search for the relics of Norwegian folklore. \u00a0The two minds and passions together proved to be a talented and successful duo.<\/p>\n

Asbj\u00f8rnsen<\/em> and Moe<\/em> took a little inspiration from the Brother\u00b4s Grimm regarding language style.\u00a0 At the time Asbj\u00f8rnsen<\/em> and Moe <\/em>were working on their compilation, Danish still had a very strong influence on spoken language in Norway after the union with Denmark ended in 1814.\u00a0 The Brother\u00b4s Grimm style consisted of simplistic language instead of dialects, while still maintaining the original form of the stories.<\/p>\n

So why is the work of Asbj\u00f8rnsen<\/em> and Moe<\/em> so influential in Norwegian culture? \u00a0Because not only is it great literature, but because at the time it was released, Norway was in a nationalist movement spurred by her recent independence from Denmark. \u00a0The stories gave Norwegians something to share culturally and something to show the world that little Norway had contributed to the folktale genre. \u00a0Asbj\u00f8rnsen<\/em> and Moe\u00b4s<\/em> folkeeventyr <\/strong>are very well-known around the world today. \u00a0English translations of the stories were published in the late 19th century. \u00a0However, if you\u00b4d like to read these stories p\u00e5 norsk, click here<\/a>\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
