{"id":74,"date":"2009-04-18T11:37:50","date_gmt":"2009-04-18T15:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=74"},"modified":"2009-04-18T11:37:50","modified_gmt":"2009-04-18T15:37:50","slug":"mandatory-military-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/mandatory-military-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory military service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2009\/06\/img_0031.jpg\" aria-label=\"Img 0031\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-103\"  alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2009\/06\/img_0031.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2009\/06\/img_0031.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2009\/06\/img_0031-263x350.jpg 263w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2009\/06\/img_0031-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Norway is a small and peaceful country and therefore you don&#8217;t hear about the Norwegian\u00a0military very often.\u00a0 I assure you that Norway&#8217;s military history is quite interesting.\u00a0 As I may have mentioned before in previous blogs, I love history and am particularly interested in wars.\u00a0 I would like to share some basic information with you about the Norwegian military.<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian men between the ages of 18 and 44 are obliged to serve 18 months <strong>i milit\u00e6ret <\/strong>(in the military).\u00a0 If a parent gives consent, a boy can enter into the military at age 17 and in wartime, men up to age 55 can serve.\u00a0 Although a man has a large window of years within which he can serve, most do so before their late 20s.\u00a0 Draft time for those who participate in the home guard is 6 months.\u00a0 Those who serve in the army, the navy, or the airforce serve 12 months.\u00a0 The remaining months are intended to be spent in annual exercises.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most people do not serve the remaining months due to lack of funding for the military.\u00a0 And actually, many Norwegian men do not serve in the military at all, or defer their service for a period of time.\u00a0 Deferral from military service is granted for stays abroad and studies.\u00a0 Exemption from military service can be granted for medical reasons or for pacifism.\u00a0 In the case of pacifism, those who apply for exemption are then required to serve 12 months of non-military service.\u00a0 Civilian service usually entails work in the health sector or other non-profit, service-related organization.<\/p>\n<p>Does Norway allow women into the armed forces?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Since 1977, women have legally been able to serve in the military alongside men.\u00a0 Since 1985, women have been able to serve in almost all capacities in the military except for para-rangers and marine commandos (no woman has met the entry requirements yet).\u00a0 However, Norway was the first country to\u00a0assign\u00a0women\u00a0to serve on\u00a0submarines (1995).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0a lot of men resent those who obtain exemption from service, many Norwegians consider serving in the military to be of great value, both for themselves and of course for their country.\u00a0 Employers often show favor to individuals who have completed their military obligation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The following is a brief list of terms that would be beneficial to know if you find yourself in a conversation about the military:<\/p>\n<p><strong>milit\u00e6r <\/strong>&#8211; military\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>forsvaret <\/strong>&#8211; defense\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>\u00e5 forsvare <\/strong>&#8211; to defend<\/p>\n<p>\ufffd<strong>en krig <\/strong>&#8211; a war\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>et slag\\en kamp <\/strong>&#8211; a battle\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>en v\u00e5pen <\/strong>&#8211; a weapon<\/p>\n<p><strong>en h\u00e6r <\/strong>&#8211; an army\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>\u00e5 tjene i h\u00e6ren &#8211; <\/strong>to serve in the army\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>fl\u00e5ten <\/strong>&#8211;
