{"id":867,"date":"2011-02-24T05:04:10","date_gmt":"2011-02-24T05:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/?p=867"},"modified":"2011-02-24T05:04:10","modified_gmt":"2011-02-24T05:04:10","slug":"the-norwegian-verb-%c2%b4to-be%c2%b4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/norwegian\/the-norwegian-verb-%c2%b4to-be%c2%b4\/","title":{"rendered":"The Norwegian verb \u00b4to be\u00b4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00e5 v\u00e6re eller \u00e5 ikke v\u00e6re<\/strong>-to be or not to be. \u00a0<strong>det er sp\u00f8rsm\u00e5let<\/strong>-that is the question.<\/p>\n<p>Alright, I couldn\u00b4t resist after I decided to write a post about the verb \u00b4to be\u00b4-<strong>\u00e5 v\u00e6re<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a verb that we probably use more than any other. \u00a0In some or another we talk about ourselves and how we feel or what we are doing. \u00a0We use the verb in several \u00a0forms. \u00a0For example:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeg <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">er<\/span> amerikansk<\/strong>. \u00a0I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">am<\/span> American.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hun <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">var<\/span> tr\u00f8tt<\/strong>. \u00a0She <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">was<\/span> tired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vi <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">skulle v\u00e6re<\/span> f\u00f8rst<\/strong>. \u00a0We <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">would be<\/span> first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Han <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">burde ha v\u00e6rt<\/span> der<\/strong>. \u00a0He <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">should have been <\/span>there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>De kommer til <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00e5 v\u00e6re<\/span> glade.<\/strong> They <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">will be<\/span> happy.<\/p>\n<p>So to make it a bit easier to get the tenses down (remember there is no verb conjugation \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0), see the table below:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Infinitive<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Present<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Past<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> Perfect<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00e5 v\u00e6re \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0er \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0var \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0har v\u00e6rt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And here is the present tense for all of the different pronouns (again notice, no verb conjugation:) \u00a0 ):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeg er Morten<\/strong>. I am Morten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Du er Morten<\/strong>. You are Morten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Han er Morten<\/strong>. He is Morten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hun er Anne.<\/strong> She is Anne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Det er Morten.<\/strong> It is\/This is Morten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vi er Morten og Anne. <\/strong>We are Morten and Anne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dere er Morten og Anne<\/strong>. You are Morten and Anne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>De er Morten og Anne.<\/strong> They are Morten and Anne.<\/p>\n<p>How about if you want to ask a question?<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, the verb placement follows the same rule as all other verbs-they are in place #1. \u00a0Unless of course you are using the verb in the infinitve form such as example 2 below. \u00a0Or if you are asking a question regarding time (example 3).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Er <\/span>du hjemme?<\/strong> Are you at home?<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0<strong>Burde du <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ha v\u00e6rt<\/span> der?<\/strong> Should you have been there?<\/p>\n<p>3.<strong> N\u00e5r <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">skal <\/span>du <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">v\u00e6re <\/span>ferdig?<\/strong> When will you be ready?<\/p>\n<p>It\u00b4s a pretty easy verb, but is irregular. \u00a0The vowel changes from a straight \u00b4a\u00b4to an \u00b4\u00e6,\u00b4 but once you have that down, it\u00b4s pretty simple. \u00a0Try to use it!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00e5 v\u00e6re eller \u00e5 ikke v\u00e6re-to be or not to be. \u00a0det er sp\u00f8rsm\u00e5let-that is the question.
