Kisiel is healthy (zdrowy), light (lekki) and perfect for every day, any time of the year! I remember eating it as a child all the time and we absolutely loved it!
Kisiel is a very simple and quick dessert (prosty i szybki deser), very popular in Eastern Europeans countries. These easy desserts are usually made with sweetened fruit puree that has been thickened with some type of starch, typically potato starch, cornstarch, or potato flour. If you use less thickening starch, you can drink it.
It can be served cold or hot, it can be served by itself, with whipped cream, with fresh fruit as well…or even better…with vanilla ice cream. I like it hot in the winter and cold in the summer of course, but it is totally up to you.
What I love about it is that it is super easy to make, either from the scratch or from a packet. You can buy the packets and most of the Polish stores or stores with European food and they are very inexpensive.
The most popular flavors are strawberry (truskawkowy), raspberry (malinowy) – my favorite, and cranberry (żurawinowy), but you can also find cherry (wiśniowy), red currant (porzeczkowy), prunes (śliwkowy) and apricot (morelowy) flavors!
I remember my mother making it for us pretty often, since I grew up on a fruit farm. A lot of times it was served as a light dinner, not dessert, at our house.
Of course the packet instructions are easy, but making it from the scratch is really easy too!
