Today I wanted to talk about verbal nouns. Pretty easy subject, however it could be a little tricky.<\/p>\n
A verbal noun is a noun derived from a verb which still retains many of the properties of the verb, including aspect. Both czytanie <\/strong>and przeczytanie <\/strong>are usually translated as ‘reading’, the first referring to the action, the second to the accomplishment.<\/p>\n Some verbs rarely form the verbal noun but, instead, use an independent noun. For example, obawa <\/strong>(fear<\/em>) is the de facto verbal noun of ba\u0107 si\u0119 <\/strong>(be afraid<\/em>) or obawia\u0107 si\u0119 <\/strong>(fear<\/em>).<\/em><\/p>\n Verbal nouns decline like neuter nouns:<\/strong><\/p>\n N. -nie\/-enie\/-cie \u00a0M\u00f3wienie prawdy jest wa\u017cne.<\/p>\n A. -nie\/-enie\/-cie \u00a0Lubi\u0119 czytanie.<\/p>\n G. -nia\/-enia\/-cia \u00a0Tu nie ma nic do jedzenia.<\/p>\n I. -niem\/-eniem\/-ciem \u00a0Interesuj\u0119 si\u0119 czytaniem.<\/p>\n D.\/L. -niu\/-eniu\/-ciu<\/p>\n Use of verbal nouns in Polish:<\/strong><\/p>\n a) In the do <\/em>+ Gen purpose construction<\/strong><\/p>\n where English often uses infinitive clauses:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Poleci\u0107 co\u015b do czytania<\/em> recommend something to read<\/p>\n Co tu jest do jedzenia?<\/em> What is there to eat?<\/p>\n Nie mam nic do powiedzenia<\/em> . I have nothing to say.<\/p>\n where English uses compounds or morphology:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n proszek do prania<\/em>\u00a0 detergent<\/p>\n proszek do pieczenia\u00a0 <\/em>baking powder<\/p>\n maszyna do pisania<\/em>\u00a0 typewriter<\/p>\n b) Often with a Genitive Noun<\/strong><\/p>\n pisanie ksi\u0105\u017cki<\/em>\u00a0 the writing of the book<\/p>\n m\u00f3wienie prawdy<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 telling the truth<\/p>\n uko\u0144czenie szko\u0142y<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 completion of school<\/p>\n c) Otherwise like English gerunds (-ing form of the verb used as a noun)<\/strong><\/p>\n Nie lubi\u0119 czekania<\/em>. I don\u2019t like waiting.<\/p>\n Takie my\u015blenie jest b\u0142\u0119dne<\/em>. Such thinking is erroneous.<\/p>\n Robienie na drutach jest nudne<\/em>. Knitting is boring.<\/p>\n P\u0142ywanie po jedzeniu jest niezdrowe<\/em>.
