Gda\u0144sk \u2014 the birthplace of Poland\u2019s Solidarity movement (ruch Solidarno\u015b\u0107<\/strong>)\u2014 has renamed a street after Vaclav Havel to honor the Czech anti-communist icon deeply revered (czczony<\/strong>)\u00a0by Poles.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Officials in the city, the home of Poland\u2019s own anti-communist icon Lech Wa\u0142\u0119sa, inaugurated Vaclav Havel Avenue<\/strong>\u00a0today, the same day the Czech playwright (dramaturg<\/strong>)\u00a0and president (prezydent<\/strong>) was being laid to rest in his homeland (ojczyzna<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Officials say they believe it\u2019s the first street worldwide to be named for Havel, who died Sunday at the age of 75.<\/p>\n

“Vaclav Havel was always a faithful friend (wierny przyjaciel<\/strong>)\u00a0of Poland and the Polish people. He left a very clear and beautiful mark on the contemporary Europe (wsp\u00f3\u0142czesna Europa<\/strong>), and the Central Europe in particular” – said President Bronis\u0142aw Komorowski.<\/div>\n

“I believe we all share the same sense of great loss (poczucie wielkiej straty<\/strong>). We have lost a trusted friend who continued to be such also in hard times” – noted Bronis\u0142aw Komorowski as he learned about the death of the former President of the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n

Following the decision of the President of Poland, the state flags flying at the Presidential Palace and the Belweder Palace were lowered at half-mast.<\/p>\n
