Unfortunately, every year, people drink and drive and that’s when we have not so happy ending…<\/p>\n

According to the Polish police, the New Year’s Eve weekend just witnessed a greater number of overall, and fatal, road accidents than a year earlier.<\/p>\n

A total of 250 road accidents (wypadki drogowe<\/strong>) took place, compared to 106 a year ago, with 31 dying \u2013 18 of whom were pedestrians (piesi, przechodnie<\/strong>). The number of people injured (ranni, poszkodowani<\/strong>) on Poland’s roads stood at 305, from 128 a year earlier.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On January 1 2012, the police pulled over 447 drivers who were found to be under the influence of alcohol (pod wp\u0142ywem\u00a0alkoholu<\/strong>), an increase on a year earlier. Better weather conditions (lepsze warunki<\/strong> pogodowe<\/strong>) than a year ago also lead to more careless driving (nieostro\u017cna jazda<\/strong>), the police reported.<\/p>\n

The 551 fires reported across Poland during the 2011-2012 New Year’s Eve weekend were mainly caused by a failure to observe safety precautions (\u015brodki ostro\u017cno\u015bci\/\u015brodki bezpiecze\u0144stwa<\/strong>) during the lighting of fireworks, the police said. A total of four people were reported to have died due to house fires.<\/p>\n

On a slightly brighter note, fewer overall accidents related to the misuse of fireworks were reported than a year earlier.<\/p>\n
