It’s hard to believe, but\u00a0Poland is marking 2nd anniversary (druga rocznica<\/strong>) of the 2010 plane crash (katastrofa samolotu<\/strong>) that killed its president Lech Kaczy\u0144ski<\/strong> and 95 others.<\/p>\n

Ceremonies took place at Pow\u0105zki military cemetery in Warsaw, and at the crash site near a military airfield in Smole\u0144sk, western Russia.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

However the late president’s twin, Jaros\u0142aw Kaczy\u0144ski, boycotted (zbojkotowa\u0142<\/strong>) the state ceremonies for the second year running and attended separate events.<\/p>\n

All 96 passengers and crew were killed in the crash in 2010, when the plane attempted to land in foggy weather.<\/p>\n

Several Polish politicians and officials, including the first lady, Maria, had been on board. They had been travelling to Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katy\u0144 massacre of more than 20,0000 Polish officers on Stalin’s orders by Soviet secret police during World War II.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Donald Tusk took part in Tuesday’s ceremony with some of the victims’ relatives in Pow\u0105zki military cemetery, where many of the crash victims are buried.<\/p>\n

President Bronis\u0142aw Komorowski attended a Mass in Warsaw, and laid flowers at a plaque commemorating the dead.<\/p>\n

Polish Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski and Russia’s Parliament Speaker Sergei Naryshkin also laid wreaths (wie\u0144ce<\/strong>) in a ceremony at the crash site in Smole\u0144sk.<\/p>\n

Poland’s culture minister Bogdan Zdrojewski has confirmed details of a monument (pomnik, monument<\/strong>) to the victims of the 2010 Smole\u0144sk\u00a0plane crash.<\/p>\n

Zdrojewski was in Smole\u0144sk\u00a0yesterday with a delegation of 120 officials and family members of the victims of the disaster which killed President Kaczy\u0144ski and 95 others.<\/p>\n

The Smole\u0144sk monument, which will be completed in time for the third anniversary of the disaster, will be composed of a long, black and cracked wall, on which the names of the 96 victims will be inscribed (wpisane<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

The design of the monument (projekt pomnika<\/strong>) was confirmed during talks between Minister Zdrojewski and his Russian counterpart Alexander Avdeyev.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, besides the official tributes at the crash site and at Katy\u0144, where wreaths were laid, Minister Zdrojewski opened a new Polish consulate (konsulat<\/strong>) in Smole\u0144sk itself.<\/p>\n

The office will not be empowered (upowa\u017cniony<\/strong>) to issue visas to Poland for Russians, but rather is intended to provide assistance (udzielanie pomocy<\/strong>) to Poles visiting the Smole\u0144sk and Katy\u0144 memorial sites.<\/p>\n
