Stone upon Stone (Kamie\u0144\u00a0na kamieniu<\/strong>) by Polish writer Wies\u0142aw My\u015bliwski<\/strong> has received this year\u2019s Best Translated Book Award in the United States.<\/p>\n

The novel was published by Archipelago Books, a small non-profit publishing house from Brooklyn specializing in the literature from the non-English speaking countries, in a translation by Bill Johnston, a professor at the University of Indiana, Bloomington, and director of its Polish Study Center.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He is one of the most prominent translators of Polish literature into English and has translated works by the Romantic poet Juliusz S\u0142owacki<\/strong>, the novelists Boles\u0142aw Prus<\/strong> and Stefan\u00a0\u017beromski<\/strong>, the avant-garde playwright and prose writer Witold Gombrowicz<\/strong> as well as contemporary Polish authors, Andrzej Stasiuk<\/strong> and Magdalena Tulli<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Several years ago Bill Johnston received the \u2018Found in Translation\u2019 Award, sponsored jointly by the Polish Cultural Institutes in London and New York, the Krak\u00f3w-based Polish Book Institute and W.A.B. Publishers of Warsaw (for New Poems by Tadeusz R\u00f3\u017cewicz).<\/p>\n

Eighty year-old Wies\u0142aw My\u015bliwski<\/strong> is one of leading Polish novelists. Most of his works focus on the life in the countryside. “Stone upon Stone”, written in 1984, is his first novel translated into English.<\/p>\n
