{"id":3185,"date":"2012-04-20T22:41:03","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T22:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/?p=3185"},"modified":"2012-05-17T23:00:59","modified_gmt":"2012-05-17T23:00:59","slug":"us-medal-of-freedom-for-jan-karski","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/us-medal-of-freedom-for-jan-karski\/","title":{"rendered":"US Medal of Freedom for Jan Karski"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Jan Karski, the Polish WW II resistance fighter, is to be posthumously awarded with the US Medal of Freedom, America&#8217;s top civilian honour, by President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/04\/karski-1.jpg\" aria-label=\"Karski 1 225x300\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3187\"  alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2012\/04\/karski-1-225x300.jpg\"><\/a>Award to <strong>Jan Karski<\/strong> &#8211; the man who tried to warn the West about the Holocuast being perpetrated by the German Nazis in occupied Poland \u2013 was announced by President Obama during a ceremony at the Holocaust Museum in Washington.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI\u2019m proud to announce that this spring I will honour [Karski] with America\u2019s highest civilian honour\u2014the Presidential Medal of Freedom,\u201d Obama said during a tour of the museum, Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe must tell our children about how this evil was allowed to happen\u2014because so many people succumbed to their darkest instincts; because so many others stood silent,\u201d Obama said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cBut let us also tell our children about the Righteous Among the Nations [those who saved Jews during WW II]. Among them was Jan Karski\u2014a young Polish Catholic\u2014who witnessed Jews being put on cattle cars, who saw the killings, and who told the truth, all the way to President Roosevelt himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Jan Karski, who died in 2000, was a courier for the Polish Underground and escaped occupied by Poland and made it to London, where he gave eyewitness accounts of the horrific conditions in the Warsaw Ghetto to the Polish-government-in-exile and British government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After the war, Karski settled in the United States and became a lecturer at Georgetown\u2019s School of Foreign Service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Do nast\u0119pnego razu&#8230;<\/strong> (Till next time&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jan Karski, the Polish WW II resistance fighter, is to be posthumously awarded with the US Medal of Freedom, America&#8217;s top civilian honour, by President Barack Obama.
