People sometimes ask me: “Do tornados happen in Poland?”<\/p>\n
Not often, but they do.<\/p>\n
One person was killed and 10 others were injured when a wave of tornadoes ripped through northern Poland, Polish media reported last Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The hardest hit localities were in the Baltic region of Pomerania and two neighbouring provinces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Throughout the affected regions, trees were uprooted (drzewa by\u0142y wyrwane z korzeniami<\/strong>), buildings damaged and power lines downed (budynki zosta\u0142y zniszczone i linie energetyczne str\u0105cone<\/strong>), and 400 hectares of woodlands (lasy<\/strong>) in the Tuchola Forest area were flattened (sp\u0142aszczone<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Some 1,200 rescuers have been working round the clock to remove fallen trees, unblock roads and restore utilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The only known fatality was a sixty-year-old man crushed to death by a collapsing building in the village of Wycinki.<\/p>\n Meteorologists have categorised the storm (sztorm, huragan, burza<\/strong>) as a class two tornado (tornado, cyklon<\/strong>) with wind velocity of up to 200 kilometres per hour, Polish TVN24 news channel reported.<\/p>\n Hailstorms, gales, cloudbursts and flash floods have hit Poland since the start of July.<\/p>\n
