We went to one of the Carrefours in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/gdansk.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Gda\u0144sk<\/a><\/strong>. Don\u2019t ask me which one, I don\u2019t know, I have absolutely no sense of direction.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, while walking around that Carrefour and looking for balsamic vinegar (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/ocet-balsamiczny.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">ocet balsamiczny<\/a><\/strong>), I ended up in their \u201cforeign foods\u201d section. And, oh dear\u2026 Take a look, because I don\u2019t know what to say:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/kuchnia-chinska.jpg\" aria-label=\"Kuchnia Chinska\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-373\"  alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/kuchnia-chinska.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/kuchnia-chinska.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/kuchnia-chinska-350x245.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kuchnia-chinska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">kuchnia chi\u0144ska<\/a><\/strong>\u201d (Chinese cuisine\/food) label and stacks of Japanese products caught me off guard. Right next to sushi rice and wasabi paste, there were Thai curries and Vietnamese hot sauce. All dutifully labeled as \u201c<strong>kuchnia chi\u0144ska<\/strong>.\u201d There was Malaysian sambal oelek, and Japanese soba noodles, all dumped under \u201c<strong>kuchnia chi\u0144ska<\/strong>.\u201d There were surprisingly few Chinese products available, apparently due to the recent restrictions on food imports from China.<\/p>\n<p>Still, wouldn\u2019t \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kuchnia-azjatycka.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">kuchnia azjatycka<\/a><\/strong>\u201d (Asian cuisine\/food) or even \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kuchnia-orientalna.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">kuchnia orientalna<\/a><\/strong>\u201d (Oriental cuisine\/food) be a better way of describing it?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNah,\u201d<\/em> said my dad, <em>\u201cif it\u2019s to be eaten with rice, then it surely must be Chinese.\u201d<\/em> He was joking, of course. Well, was he? Apparently, that\u2019s how the great majority of Polish people I talked to thought about Asian cooking. And they looked at me funny when I explained it\u2019s like dumping Polish, Ukrainian, Czech, Bulgarian and other Eastern European cuisines under a common Russian label. I mean, they all eat borscht and potatoes and drink vodka, right? Same, same. <em>\u201cOh, no,\u201d<\/em> my friend would answer, <em>\u201cit\u2019s different in Europe.\u201d<\/em> Well, is it?<\/p>\n<p>And while we ponder this contradiction, let\u2019s take a look at the word \u201c<strong>kuchnia<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nIt\u2019s an interesting, all purpose word in Polish.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>kuchnia<\/strong> (<em>fem., pl.<\/em> <strong>kuchnie<\/strong>) \u2013 kitchen, as in \u2013 that room in your house\/apartment where you prepare your meals. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kuchnia-kuchnie.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">audio<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But, it also can mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stove, cooker &#8211; <strong>kuchenka<\/strong> (a diminutive form of \u201c<strong>kuchnia<\/strong>\u201d), or<\/li>\n<li>cooking, as in \u201cgood cooking\u201d &#8211; <strong>dobra kuchnia<\/strong>, or<\/li>\n<li>cuisine, as in \u201cChinese cuisine\u201d \u2013 <strong>kuchnia chi\u0144ska<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And there are a few other words derived from the same root:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>kucharz<\/strong> (<em>masc., pl.<\/em> <strong>kucharze<\/strong>) \u2013 chef, cook (male) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kucharz-kucharze.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">audio<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>kucharka<\/strong> (<em>fem., pl.<\/em> <strong>kucharki<\/strong>) \u2013 cook (female) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kucharka-kucharki.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">audio<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>kuchenny<\/strong> \u2013 an adjective describing something to do with &#8220;kitchen,&#8221; for example: <strong>sprz\u0119t kuchenny<\/strong> \u2013 kitchen equipment, or <strong>pomoc kuchenna<\/strong> \u2013 kitchen help. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kuchenny-examples.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">audio<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But I think it\u2019s more fun to talk about different cuisines of the world, wouldn\u2019t you agree? So, here we go:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kuchnia-polska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">kuchnia polska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Polish cuisine<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/francuska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">francuska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 French cuisine<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/wloska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">w\u0142oska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Italian c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/hiszpanska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">hiszpa\u0144ska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Spanish c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/srodziemnomorska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">sr\u00f3dziemnomorska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Mediterranean c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/grecka.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">grecka<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Greek c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/japonska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">japo\u0144ska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Japanese c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/tajska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">tajska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Thai c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/indyjska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">indyjska<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Indian c.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And now I\u2019m totally hungry\u2026 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/12\/kuchnia-koreanska.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Kuchnia korea\u0144ska<\/a><\/strong> (Korean food) for dinner tonight!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"245\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/kuchnia-chinska-350x245.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/kuchnia-chinska-350x245.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2008\/11\/kuchnia-chinska.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>Last week I went food shopping with my dad.
