I haven\u2019t even started mine, to be honest. And if someone asks me why, I\u2019m going to tell them that I\u2019m turning Greek orthodox this year. Speaking of which, these guys have it so easy \u2013 everything is on sale for THEIR xmas. Not fair, so not fair&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And everybody asks me what I want to get \u201c<strong>pod choink\u0119<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>na Gwiazdk\u0119<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>na \u015awi\u0119ta<\/strong>.\u201d Well, let\u2019s see\u2026 I want an orange 350Z, and a new MacBookPro, and a live-in maid, but I\u2019d settle for a Sony Alpha 700. And oh yeah, world peace and all that.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s back up for a sec.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>choinka<\/strong> (<em>fem., pl.<\/em> <strong>choinki<\/strong>) \u2013 Christmas tree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So \u201c<strong>pod choink\u0119<\/strong>\u201d means \u201cunder the Christmas tree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u015awi\u0119ta Bo\u017cego Narodzenia<\/strong> (though, normally \u201c<strong>Bo\u017cego Narodzenia<\/strong>\u201d is implied and understood) \u2013 Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can simply say \u201c<strong>Bo\u017ce Narodzenie<\/strong>\u201d which literally means something like \u201cGod\u2019s Birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And now, \u201c<strong>Gwiazdka<\/strong>,\u201d hmmm\u2026 Remember when in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/polish\/mikolajki\/\" target=\"_blank\">post about \u015awi\u0119ty Miko\u0142aj<\/a> I mentioned this other guy \u2013 <strong>Gwiazdor<\/strong>. His name comes from the word \u201c<strong>Gwiazdka<\/strong>.\u201d And that literally means \u201clittle star\u201d from the legend that a star appeared in the sky when baby Jesus was born.<\/p>\n<p>So, if someone asks you \u201c<strong>Co chcesz na Gwiazdk\u0119?<\/strong>\u201d or more politely \u201c<strong>Co chcia\u0142aby\u015b<\/strong> (or <strong>chcia\u0142by\u015b<\/strong> if you&#8217;re asking a guy) <strong>dosta\u0107 na Gwiazdk\u0119?<\/strong>\u201d they\u2019re simply asking you what you want (or would like) to get for Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>And finally:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>zakupy \u015bwi\u0105teczne<\/strong> \u2013 Christmas shopping<\/li>\n<li><strong>prezenty \u015bwi\u0105teczne<\/strong> \u2013 Christmas presents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now I\u2019m off to the kitchen trying to figure out how to help my friend with her traditional <strong>Wigilia<\/strong> dinner. Twelve different dishes, hay under the table, <strong>op\u0142atek<\/strong> (Christmas wafer), the whole nice yards. And between the two of us, we don\u2019t even know how to make <strong>barszcz czerwony<\/strong> (red borscht).<\/p>\n<p>This shall be interesting\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weso\u0142ych \u015awi\u0105t!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>PS.
