Poland is a democracy<\/strong>, with a president (prezydent<\/span><\/strong>) as a head of state, whose current constitution dates from 1997. The government (rz\u0105d<\/span><\/strong>) structure centers on the Council of Ministers (Rada Ministr\u00f3w<\/span><\/strong>), led by a prime minister (premier<\/span><\/strong>). The president appoints the cabinet (gabinet<\/span><\/strong>) according to the proposals of the prime minister, typically from the majority coalition in the Sejm<\/strong><\/span>. The president is elected by popular vote every five years. The current president is Bronis\u0142aw Komorowski<\/strong><\/span>. The current prime minister, Donald Tusk<\/span><\/strong>, was appointed in 2007 after his party made significant gains in that year’s parliamentary elections. In 2011, Tusk became the first Polish prime minister in history to be democratically re-elected for a consecutive term.<\/p>\n Polish voters elect a bicameral parliament consisting of a 460-member lower house (Sejm<\/span><\/strong>) and a 100-member Senate (Senat<\/strong><\/span>). The Sejm is elected under proportional representation according to the d’Hondt method, a method similar to that used in many parliamentary political systems.
