The outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) (wirusowa choroba Ebola<\/strong>)\u00a0or the Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) – Gor\u0105czka krwotoczna Ebola<\/strong>– is becoming an international concern. This fatal and serious disease ( \u015bmiertelna i powa\u017cna choroba<\/strong>) has reached Guinea, Liberia as well as eastern Sierra Leone. Recently, it has also starting spreading, and there are seven cases \u00a0of the disease\u00a0in Europe, in the UK, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands; four in the Middle East; and three in the US (Houston, Atlanta and New York).\u00a0It is said to be one of most infectious diseases in the world today, with a fatality rate of up to 90%. The World Health Organization (WHO) have called the outbreak the worst one in history, with over 1,500 laboratory confirmed cases of Ebola virus this year alone, and 887 deaths resulting from the epidemic.<\/p>\n

Ebola is a fast-acting virus (wirus szybko dzia\u0142aj\u0105cy<\/strong>), which first reared its head in 1976. The infection is transmitted through direct contact with blood (bezpo\u015bredni kontakt z krwi\u0105<\/strong>), bodily fluids (p\u0142yny ustrojowe\/p\u0142yny cia\u0142a<\/strong>), and tissues of infected animals or people (tkanki zaka\u017conych zwierz\u0105t lub ludzi<\/strong>). Ebola is known to cause a violent hemorrhagic fever (gor\u0105czka krwotoczna<\/strong>) that leads to external and internal bleeding (krwawienie zewn\u0119trzne i wewn\u0119trzne<\/strong>). Between humans, Ebola is known to spread in the following ways:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Direct contact through mucus membranes and broken skin with the secretions, blood, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people (Bezpo\u015bredni kontakt przez b\u0142ony \u015bluzowe i uszkodzon\u0105 sk\u00f3r\u0119 z wydzielin, krwi, organ\u00f3w lub innych p\u0142ynami ustrojowymi osoby zaka\u017conej<\/strong>)
\n\u00b7 Indirect contact with any environment which these fluids have contaminated (Po\u015bredni kontakt z ka\u017cdym \u015brodowiskiem, kt\u00f3re te p\u0142yny zanieczy\u015bci\u0142y<\/strong>)
\n\u00b7 Exposure to objects such as needles which infected secretions have come in contact with (Nara\u017cenie na przedmioty takie jak ig\u0142y, kt\u00f3re mia\u0142y kontakt z \u00a0zainfekowanymi wydzielinami<\/strong>)
\n\u00b7 Direct contact with an infected corpse (Bezpo\u015bredni kontakt z zainfekowanymi zw\u0142okami<\/strong>)
\n\u00b7 Semen of men, who have recovered from Ebola are known to be virus transmitters for up to 7 weeks after recovery (Nasienie m\u0119\u017cczyzn, kt\u00f3rzy wyzdrowieli z Ebola, mog\u0105 przenosi\u0107 wirusy maksymalnie 7 tygodni po odzysku<\/strong>)
\n\u00b7 Health care workers who may have been exposed to the virus while treating patients (Pracownicy s\u0142u\u017cby zdrowia, kt\u00f3rzy mog\u0105 by\u0107 nara\u017ceni na wirusa podczas leczenia pacjent\u00f3w<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

The 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak, which has been affecting Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria and Liberia, is said to be the largest one till date. The symptoms of the virus is said to be exhibited anywhere from 2 to 21 days from the time of infection.<\/p>\n

Symptoms include headache, fever, diarrhea, weakness, muscle and joint ache, loss of appetite, stomach pain, and vomiting (Objawy to b\u00f3le g\u0142owy, gor\u0105czka, biegunka, os\u0142abienie, b\u00f3le mi\u0119\u015bni i staw\u00f3w, utrata apetytu, b\u00f3l brzucha i wymioty<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Some less common symptoms include trouble swallowing, shortness of breath, chest pain, sore throat and hiccups (trudno\u015bci w po\u0142ykaniu, duszno\u015b\u0107, b\u00f3l w klatce piersiowej, b\u00f3l gard\u0142a i czkawka<\/strong>). Some early symptoms of Ebola also include dengue fever, malaria and other tropical fever, before it progresses to the bleeding phase.<\/p>\n

It is still unclear as to how people are actually infected with Ebola. Due to this, no vaccine (szczepionka<\/strong>) has been formulated. Precautionary measures to safeguard oneself from Ebola, if one is traveling to areas where the outbreak is present, are as follows:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Be sure to practice careful hygiene. If someone is sick with Ebola, avoid contact with any bodily fluids or blood, which may cause infection.
\n\u00b7 Avoid touching items that may have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or body fluids.
\n\u00b7 Avoid contact with raw or undercooked meat (bushmeat) and wild animals.
\n\u00b7 Avoid burial rituals or funerals which require an infected person’s body to be handled.
\n\u00b7 Avoid visiting hospitals in the area where Ebola patients are receiving treatment.
\n\u00b7 Contact your consulate to provide specific advice on facilities that are suitable for your needs.
\n\u00b7 If you develop a fever higher than 101.5\u00b0F or 38.6\u00b0C or other symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, severe headache, stomach pain, muscle pain, unexplained bruising or bleeding, seek medical help immediately.
\n\u00b7 Avoid travelling by public transport in areas that have been infected.
\n\u00b7 Limit your contact with other people if you travel to a hospital or a doctor.<\/p>\n
